She Dozed Off on a Kind Stranger—Only to Learn He Was the Nation’s Most Feared General

The Choice for Reality

As Emma drove away, Alex pulled out his phone and called his assistant.

“James, I need you to prepare a complete background check on someone. Emma Rose, kindergarten teacher in Sacramento.”

“And James, this is personal, not business. Be discreet.”

What Alex didn’t anticipate was that Emma would do some research of her own. That evening, she typed “Alex Sterling Technology San Francisco” into her laptop. The results left her staring at her screen in shock.

“Alexander Sterling, billionaire CEO of Sterling Innovations, net worth $2.1 billion.”

The kind stranger was one of the richest men in America. Emma closed her laptop and sat in stunned silence in her tiny apartment, Whiskers purring on her lap. The fairy tale had just become incredibly complicated.

Emma barely slept that night. She kept replaying every moment, seeing it now through the lens of Alexander’s true identity. By morning, she had convinced herself that their connection had been one-sided.

She was just a brief diversion, a novelty in his world. Perhaps he collected experiences the way other people collected stamps. When her phone rang at 7:00 a.m., Emma almost didn’t answer the unknown number.

“Emma, it’s Alex. I hope I’m not calling too early.”

His voice was exactly as she remembered, warm and slightly husky.

“No, it’s fine. I was already awake.”

“I was wondering if we could move our dinner up to this afternoon. Something’s come up with work tomorrow.”

Emma closed her eyes, steeling herself.

“Actually, Alex, I think we should talk. Could you meet me somewhere public?”

“There’s a coffee shop called Luna’s on Fifth Street.”

There was a slight pause on the other end.

“Of course. I’ll be there in an hour.”

Alex arrived at Luna’s feeling uncharacteristically nervous. The tiny cafe was unlike anywhere he’d been in years. Emma was already there, her expression guarded.

“Thank you for meeting me,” Emma said as Alex sat down.

“You look like you’re about to fire me,” Alex said lightly.

Emma didn’t smile.

“I know who you are, Alex. Or should I say Alexander Sterling?”

Alex felt his stomach drop.

“Two point one billion dollars,” she continued, her voice steady but hurt.

“CEO of Sterling Innovations. Is any of what you told me true, or was this all some kind of elaborate game?”

Alex leaned forward intently.

“Everything I told you was true. I just didn’t tell you everything.”

“Didn’t tell me everything?” Emma’s voice rose slightly.

“Alex, you let me sleep on your shoulder thinking you were just a regular businessman.”

“You listened to me talk about my twenty-eight-thousand-dollar salary while you probably spend that much on a single dinner. Do you have any idea how humiliating that feels?”

“Your salary has nothing to do with who you are as a person,” Alex said firmly.

“Doesn’t it?” Emma challenged.

“When was the last time you dated someone who wasn’t wealthy? When was the last time someone didn’t want something from you?”

Alex was quiet for a long moment.

“That’s what I thought,” Emma nodded sadly.

“We’re from completely different worlds. I teach five-year-olds how to tie their shoes. You run a company that could buy my entire school district.”

“So that’s it?” Alex asked, his composed exterior beginning to crack.

“You’re going to let money dictate whether or not we explore what’s between us?”

“Alex, you could date anyone,” Emma repeated.

“I would be so far out of my depth in your life that I’d drown.”

Alex stared at her, his green eyes intense.

“You want to know about my world, Emma? My world is full of people who smile at me while calculating what I’m worth to them.”

“I’ve dated women who know my stock portfolio better than they know my favorite color.”

He reached across the table to gently touch her hand.

“You fell asleep on my shoulder because you were exhausted from taking care of someone you love. You apologized for it instead of asking what you could get from me.”

Emma felt tears gathering in her eyes.

“Do you know what my favorite color is, Emma?”

She shook her head.

“Neither did I, until I spent a day with someone who cared enough to notice that I always wear blue ties. It’s blue, by the way.”

Emma’s resolve began to crumble.

“Alex, this is impossible. People will think I’m a gold digger.”

“Let them think whatever they want,” Alex said intensely.

“I’ve never found anyone who made me want to share my life until now. Not the money—share me.”

He stood up and moved to the chair beside her.

“I’m not asking you to change who you are. I’m asking you to let me be part of your world.”

Emma looked into his eyes and saw the man who had kept her safe during the storm.

“What about the paparazzi? The media attention?”

“We’ll figure it out together,” Alex promised.

“I don’t need you to be anything other than exactly who you are right now.”

Emma was quiet for a long moment.

“Your favorite color is blue,” she finally said with a smile.

Alex’s face broke into a relieved grin.

“And yours is yellow, like the sunflowers on your windowsill.”

“Why did you remember that?” Emma asked, amazed.

“Because I listened,” he said.

“Okay,” she whispered.

“But promise me that if this gets too complicated, we’ll be honest about it.”

Alex cupped her face gently.

“I promise you, Emma Rose, you will always be the woman who fell asleep on my shoulder and changed my entire world.”

Their first kiss was soft and sweet. Over the next six months, Alex kept his promise, protecting Emma’s privacy and spending Friday afternoons in her classroom reading stories.

When Alex proposed, he did it after school on a Friday. He got down on one knee next to the sunflowers on the windowsill and promised her a life of genuine love.

Emma said yes to Alex, the man who remembered her favorite color. They proved that love doesn’t recognize bank account balances, only two hearts that choose to beat in rhythm.
