She Helped a Crying Boy Alone at a Diner — Hours Later, Her Life Changed Forever…
Waiting for a Lifeline
She slowly approached him and knelt beside the booth. “Hey buddy,” she said gently.
“Are you okay? Where’s your mom or dad?”
The boy looked up at her. His lower lip trembled as he whispered, “Mom said she’d be right back.”
“She went to the car, but she didn’t come back.” Rachel scanned the parking lot through the wide front window.
No one was waiting, and no one was walking back. Her heart skipped a beat.
“Okay,” she said softly, masking her concern. “How about I keep you company until she comes back, huh? You hungry?”
He nodded. She brought him a plate of chocolate chip pancakes with a little whipped cream smiley face.
She gave him a cup of warm cocoa with marshmallows. As he ate slowly, Rachel sat with him when she could, sneaking over between orders.
She learned his name was Jaden, and he was six. He liked dinosaurs and coloring.
His mom had been really, really sad this morning. Something in the way he said it hit Rachel hard.
She’d seen that kind of sadness in her own mother’s eyes before her battle with depression ended too soon. She alerted the manager quietly.
The manager contacted the local authorities. Two kind officers showed up discreetly.
They gently asked Jaden questions, but no missing child reports had come in. There was no sign of his mother’s vehicle.
They began searching nearby gas stations and hospitals. Rachel, on her break, stayed by Jaden’s side.
She gave him crayons and napkins to draw on. She played word games and told him silly stories about a pancake that grew legs and ran away.
Time passed. Then, 2 hours later, a silver sedan screeched into the diner parking lot.
A woman jumped out with her hair disheveled. A hospital band was still on her wrist, and tears were streaming down her face.
“Jaden!” she screamed. The boy turned, and his face lit up in recognition.
“Mom!” Rachel watched, her breath caught in her throat.
The woman collapsed to her knees and hugged her son fiercely, sobbing uncontrollably. Through gasps and broken sentences, the woman explained.
