She Helps Him Escape His Overbearing Date, Not Knowing The Grateful Stranger Is A CEO Falling Fast

An Unexpected Rescue

The text message made Brooke Harmon nearly drop her coffee. “Horrible date. Send help.” She stared at her phone, recognizing her best friend Mia’s standard SOS.

With a quick glance at her watch, Brooke realized she had 20 minutes before her shift started at the library. It was just enough time to stage a rescue at the cafe across the street.

Peering through the window of Brew and Bean, Brooke spotted Mia trapped in a corner booth with a man who seemed to be talking without pause for breath. Poor Mia looked like she was contemplating an escape through the bathroom window.

As Brooke prepared to execute their well-practiced emergency extraction plan, she noticed something odd. At the next table, a tall man with dark hair was frantically scribbling something on a napkin while shooting desperate glances toward the exit.

His date, a woman with perfect blonde hair, was gesturing emphatically with manicured nails and leaning uncomfortably close. The man’s expression was a perfect blend of politeness and barely disguised panic.

Brooke hesitated. She’d come to rescue Mia, but something about the stranger’s predicament made her pivot. Making a split-second decision, she strode into the cafe, bypassing Mia’s table entirely.

“There you are!” Brooke exclaimed, approaching the stranger’s table with confident familiarity. “I’m so sorry I’m late. The meeting ran longer than expected”.

The man looked up, confusion flashing across his face before understanding dawned. His shoulders relaxed visibly as he played along. “No problem at all. I was just having coffee while waiting”.

The blonde woman’s smile tightened. “And who are you?”.

“Brooke Harmon, his sister’s best friend,” She improvised smoothly. “We have that charity planning session in 15 minutes, remember? The whole board is waiting”.

“Right, the charity thing,” The man said, standing quickly. He turned to his date with an apologetic smile. “Vanessa, I’m really sorry to cut this short”.

Vanessa’s expression soured. “But we were just getting to know each other. Surely your little charity event can wait”.

“Unfortunately not,” Brooke interjected. “Major donors involved. Very time-sensitive”.

She tapped her watch meaningfully. “I’ll call you,” The man promised Vanessa, though his tone suggested otherwise.

Once outside, he exhaled deeply, running a hand through his dark hair. “Thank you for that. Seriously, you’re a lifesaver”.

Brooke smiled, suddenly aware she just rescued a complete stranger. “No problem. You had that ‘please someone save me’ look I’ve seen on too many blind dates gone wrong”.

“That obvious, huh?”. He extended his hand. “Hunter Grayson”.

“Brooke Harmon”. Her hand felt small in his firm grip. “And yes, that obvious. I was actually here to rescue my friend,” She admitted, gesturing toward the window where Mia could still be seen nodding politely at her date.

Hunter glanced inside and chuckled. “Looks like she needs the same service”.

“Oh right,” Brooke checked her watch. “I should probably…”.

Her phone buzzed with another text from Mia. “Never mind. He just left to take a call. Making my escape now. Crisis averted,” Brooke said, showing Hunter the message.

“Well then, can I buy you a coffee to thank you, or are you actually late for something?”.

Brooke hesitated. “I start work in 10 minutes, unfortunately. Library across the street”.

“Librarian, huh?” Hunter looked genuinely interested. “That explains the impressive quick thinking. All those stories must keep your imagination sharp”.

Brooke laughed. “Something like that”. She found herself reluctant to end their conversation. “Maybe a rain check on that coffee?”.

“I’d like that”. His smile reached his eyes, creating small crinkles at the corners. He pulled out a business card and handed it to her.

“My cell’s on there. I’m afraid I don’t have much time for dating these days, but I’d make an exception for someone who heroically rescues strangers”.

Brooke took the card, glancing at it briefly before tucking it into her pocket. “I’ll text you. And good luck with Vanessa if she calls”.

“Oh, I think I lost my phone,” Hunter said with exaggerated innocence. “Terrible shame”.

With a laugh and a wave, Brooke hurried across the street to the library. She did not realize she just walked away from the CEO of Grayson Renewables, one of the fastest growing clean energy companies in the country.

Later that evening, Brooke finally remembered the business card in her pocket. This was after reshelving returns and helping a frustrated graduate student locate obscure academic journals.

Pulling it out, she nearly dropped it when she saw the embossed logo and title. “Hunter Grayson, Chief Executive Officer, Grayson Renewables”. “No way,” She whispered to herself, quickly searching his name on her phone.

Sure enough, dozens of articles appeared about the young CEO who had transformed his father’s struggling manufacturing company into a renewable energy powerhouse. There he was in Forbes, Fortune, and even speaking at last year’s climate summit.

Brooke sat back in her chair, stunned. She just impulsively rescued one of the most influential businessmen in green energy, treating him like any other poor soul stuck on a bad date.

Her phone buzzed with a text from an unknown number. “This is Hunter from the cafe rescue. Just wanted to make sure you had my number. That rain check for coffee still stands”.

Brooke stared at her phone, suddenly nervous. Should she acknowledge that she now knew who he was? Would that make things weird?.

After several minutes of typing and deleting, she settled on her response. “Rain check definitely stands. Free tomorrow afternoon around two”.

His response came quickly. “Perfect. Same cafe. Promise no overbearing dates will interrupt this time”.

Brooke smiled. “It’s a date. I mean, not a date date, but you know what I mean”.

“I know what you mean, but for the record, I wouldn’t mind if it was a date date”.

Brooke’s heart skipped. She was going to need Mia’s help choosing an outfit.
