In the weeks that followed, Laya withdrew.

“I don’t want to ruin your life,” she told him one night, eyes shadowed.

“You’re not ruining anything,” he said.

“You don’t have to. Just let me be here now.”

One evening, Jonathan came home to find a note on the kitchen counter.

Hours passed. Rain started. By midnight, he was driving the streets, searching.

He found her at the old bus station, sitting on a bench, staring into the dark.

“Why here?” he asked gently, sitting beside her.

On the anniversary of her disappearance, they visited the old garden where she’d last been seen. Laya stood among the overgrown hedges, a faint smile on her lips.

Jonathan slipped an arm around her shoulders.

That night, as they sat on the porch, watching the sun sink behind the trees, Laya leaned her head on his shoulder.
