She Missed the Last Bus on New Year’s Eve—Until a Single Dad Stepped In and Changed Everything.
Healing the Museum
When they pulled up to the modest craftsman with Christmas lights still hanging from the gutters, Megan followed them inside like she was in a dream. The inside of the house made Megan’s chest tight because it was clearly a shrine to Nathan’s dead wife.
Photos of a beautiful blonde woman were everywhere. Decorations looked like they hadn’t been touched in years.
Everything was frozen in time like a museum. Nathan showed her to the guest room which was clearly his late wife’s craft room with a sewing machine in the corner and half-finish quilts on shelves.
“Bathrooms across the hall towels in the closet Help yourself to anything you need And Megan seriously don’t worry about leaving early Get some rest You’ve had a hell of a night.”
Megan sat on the bed after he left and looked around at all of Clare’s things.
“I just moved into a dead woman’s craft room on New Year’s Eve This is either the beginning of something or the biggest mistake of my life.”
Megan woke up on January 1st at 8:00 in the morning to the smell of pancakes and the sound of a 7-year-old jumping on her bed.
“You’re still here You didn’t leave Daddy’s making breakfast and he never makes breakfast This is so exciting.”
For the first time in 6 months she woke up feeling like maybe she wasn’t completely alone in the world. She followed Ellie downstairs to find Nathan in the kitchen with flower on his shirt flipping pancakes.
The radio played some country station and it was so domestic and normal that Megan felt like she’d stepped into someone else’s life. Over breakfast Megan explained that her landlord said the apartment building inspection would take at least 3 to four weeks.
She was doing math in her head trying to figure out how she could afford a hotel for a month on her nurse salary.
“Look this is going to sound crazy but the guest room is just sitting empty collecting dust Why don’t you stay here until your building is fixed?”
“And honestly you’d be helping me out because I work really long construction hours and if you could just be around when Ellie gets home from school That would be huge.”
“I can’t just move into your house We literally met 12 hours ago That’s insane.”
But Ellie was already bouncing in her seat.
“Please stay Please please please I really like you.”
“And daddy’s never home after school and the babysitter’s boring.”
Nathan said, “I’m not asking you to be a nanny I’m just saying if we’re both here anyway and you happen to be around it would be mutually beneficial.”
“You get a free place to stay and I get some peace of mind knowing Ellie’s not alone Think about it as roommates not charity.”
So Megan moved in temporarily with the four boxes that contained everything she owned. Nathan helped her carry them up to the guest room.
When he saw how little she had his face did this thing that made Megan want to cry. She could see him realizing just how alone she really was.
They fell into a routine over the next few weeks that felt shockingly natural. Megan worked her night shifts at the hospital and came home in the mornings to sleep.
Then she’d wake up around 3:00 and be there when Ellie got off the school bus. They’d do homework together and start dinner and Nathan would come home around 6:00 covered in sawdust.
The house felt alive in a way it clearly hadn’t in years. By late January Megan had started actually cooking real meals instead of the frozen dinners Nathan had been surviving on.
She’d slowly started adding little touches to the house like fresh flowers on the table and curtains that actually let light in. Nathan caught himself smiling at dinner for the first time in 3 years.
Ellie was thriving too. Her grades improved and she was laughing more and she’d started talking about Megan like she was a permanent fixture.
“Megan and I are going to plant flowers in spring.”
There was no question Megan would still be there. Everything shifted one night in late January when Ellie woke up at 2:00 in the morning with a fever of 103.
Nathan absolutely lost it in a way that Megan had never seen. He was shaking and couldn’t form coherent sentences.
He kept saying, “We need to go to the hospital right now Something’s really wrong We can’t wait.”
Megan put her hands on his shoulders.
“Nathan look at me She has the flu It’s going around her school Her fever is high but manageable I’m a nurse I’ve got this but I need you to breathe.”
She stayed up all night monitoring Ellie’s fever and giving her medicine and keeping her hydrated. Nathan sat in the hallway outside Ellie’s room with his head in his hands clearly having some kind of PTSD episode.
Around 4 in the morning when Ellie’s fever finally broke and she fell into peaceful sleep Megan found Nathan still sitting in the hallway.
“Want to tell me what that was about?”
“Claire’s cancer started with symptoms we thought were just the flu By the time we realized it was serious it was stage four.”
“And every time Ellie gets sick I’m right back there watching my wife die and being completely powerless to stop it.”
Megan took his hand.
“I’m an oncology nurse That’s my specialty I work with cancer patients every single day.”
Nathan looked at her like he was seeing her for the first time.
“God of course you do That’s some kind of cosmic joke isn’t it the universe putting you in my house when hospitals are the last place I ever want to think about.”
They sat in silence for a long time.
“Thank you for tonight for knowing what to do for not letting me spiral I don’t know what I would have done without you here.”
“You would have figured it out You’re a good dad Nathan You’re doing better than you think.”
February hit and they were closer than ever almost like a real family. One night after Ellie went to bed they were sitting on the couch watching some movie neither of them was paying attention to.
They were so close their shoulders were touching and Nathan turned to say something. Megan turned at the same time and suddenly their faces were inches apart.
They both leaned in and almost kissed but at the last second Nathan pulled back.
“This is really complicated.”
“I know I should probably find my own place My apartment’s been ready for 2 weeks The landlord texted me.”
Nathan’s face showed pure panic.
“You don’t have to go I don’t want you to go.”
“But I can’t stay like this I’m not your wife Nathan I can’t replace her and I shouldn’t have to.”
“Look around You haven’t changed a single thing in this house in 3 years I’m literally sleeping in her craft room surrounded by quilts she made This isn’t healthy for either of us.”
It was the first time either of them had acknowledged the elephant in the room and Nathan didn’t have a response because he knew she was right.
Valentine’s Day arrived and Nathan’s in-laws Tom and Linda showed up unannounced for their monthly visit with Ellie. They walked into the house to find Megan cooking dinner and Ellie setting the table.
The whole scene looked domestic and couplike in a way that made Linda’s face go ice cold. Introductions were painfully awkward with Nathan explaining that Megan was staying with them temporarily after her apartment flooded.
“Temporarily It’s been six weeks That’s not really temporary anymore is it.”
Dinner was tense and terrible. Linda barely spoke to Megan and kept making comments about Clare.
“Clare always made pot roast on Sundays It was Ellie’s favorite Remember sweetheart?”
After Ellie went to bed the confrontation Megan had been dreading finally happened.
“I need to know what’s going on here Nathan Who is this woman really Because it looks an awful lot like you’re replacing our daughter.”
“That’s not fair.”
“Megan needed help and we had space It’s not like that.”
Tom jumped in.
“She’s an oncology nurse Nathan Really You’re working through your grief by playing house with someone who reminds you of the doctors who couldn’t save Clare This is textbook transference.”
Megan was listening from the hallway where she’d gone to grab her phone and she felt like she’d been slapped. She quietly went upstairs and started packing her things.
By morning her bags were by the door. When Nathan found her she spoke firmly.
“I’m going back to my apartment It’s time Your in-laws are right I’m a standin for everything you lost and that’s not fair to anyone.”
“That’s not true You’re not a stand-in.”
“Aren’t I You haven’t moved on Nathan Your entire house is a museum to Clare I can’t compete with a ghost and I shouldn’t have to.”
That’s when Ellie came running down the stairs and saw the bags and started crying.
“No Megan don’t go Please don’t leave us I love you.”
Megan knelt down and hugged her.
“I love you too sweetheart but I have to go I’ll still see you I promise.”
Even though they both knew that was probably a lie.
