She Was Left Alone at a Blind Date — Until the Billionaire Next Table said: “You Deserve Better”

The Truth Revealed

Her phone chimed with a text from Jackson: “Thinking of you. Dinner tonight?” Instead of responding, Audrey took the subway to the Hayes Redevelopment Headquarters.

In the marble lobby, she approached security. “I’d like to speak with someone from your community relations department.”

“Do you have an appointment?”

“No, but it’s regarding the Riverside project.” Minutes later, she was escorted to Diana Winters, director of community relations.

“I’m here about Jackson Hayes,” Audrey began, pulling out the articles. “I’m looking for the truth about these.”

Diana’s eyes widened. “Where did you get these? They were left at my apartment door last night.”

Understanding dawned on Diana. “You’re Audrey. He mentioned he was seeing someone special tonight.”

“Are they true?” Audrey asked directly.

Diana sighed. “Partially. These stories came out during our conflict with Robert Blackwell.”

“Robert was Jackson’s father’s oldest friend and business partner. He was not pleased when Jackson began redirecting resources toward affordable housing.”

“So these articles were part of a carefully orchestrated smear campaign?” Audrey murmured.

“The anonymous text warning me away… could that have been Blackwell too?” Diana confirmed, “Robert believes everyone has a price. If he couldn’t buy Jackson’s cooperation, he’d try to isolate him.”

“But there’s something you should know about Jackson. He never gives up on what or who he believes in.”

The office door opened and Jackson appeared. “Audrey, what are you doing here?”

Diana handed him the articles. “Someone sent Miss Wilson a curated selection of last year’s Blackwell hit pieces.”

Jackson’s expression darkened. “Robert,” he muttered. “Did he contact you directly?”

“I received an anonymous text warning me away from you,” Audrey admitted. Something dangerous flashed across Jackson’s face.

Jackson looked weary. “I should have anticipated Robert might try something like this. He’s been suspiciously quiet lately.”

“Why would he care about your personal life?”

“Because he knows I’ve been happier these past two days than I’ve been in years. And happy people are harder to manipulate.”

The admission cut through Audrey’s doubts. “I think I’m beginning to see the real Jackson Hayes.”

“Someone who makes powerful enemies by standing up for what he believes in.” Jackson reached for her hand.

“I’ve never lied to you, Audrey, and I never will. My company isn’t perfect and neither am I.”

“Everything I told you about my priorities, my vision for ethical development… that was the truth.” Audrey believed him.

“What happens now?”

“Now I take you to dinner as planned, and we see where this goes.” As they left his office, Audrey noticed the respectful nods from employees.

In the elevator, Jackson turned to her. “I’m impressed by your investigative skills. Not many people would have done the research before jumping to conclusions.”

“Librarian,” she reminded him with a smile. “Research is what we do.”

Over the following weeks, their relationship deepened. Jackson began appearing at her library story time.

She accompanied him to community meetings, offering perspectives that often hadn’t been considered. Her suggestion to incorporate children’s reading rooms led to a partnership with the library system.

Three months later, Jackson invited Audrey to his home, a modest penthouse with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. He handed her a first edition of The Secret Garden.

Inside was an inscription: “To Audrey, who showed me that second chances and new beginnings are always possible. With all my love, Jackson.”

“There’s something else,” Jackson said nervously. “I’m converting a building in Brooklyn into a community center.”

“I’ve set aside space for a new children’s library branch. I was hoping you’d design and run it.”

Audrey stared in disbelief. “You’re offering me a job?”

“I’m offering you an opportunity to create something special, with complete creative control and a substantial budget.”

“Would I be working for you?”

“The space is donated to the city. You’d be working for the library, same as now, just with more resources.”

He took her hands. “Say no if you want to. Our relationship doesn’t depend on your answer.”

Audrey considered it. “I’d want to make it accessible to all children, regardless of background.”

“That’s exactly why I want you to run it.”

“And I’d need assurances that the space would remain dedicated to the library long-term.”

“I’ll put it in writing. A 99-year lease to the city for one dollar per year.”

Six months later, Audrey stood in the “Secret Garden” children’s library as construction continued. Jackson appeared.

“Having any regrets about accepting the position?”

“Not one.” She leaned into him. “Though Jessica still thinks I engineered that blind date mixup to catch a billionaire.”

“And what does Tyler think?”

“No idea, but I heard he’s dating Jessica now so I guess it all worked out.”

Suddenly, Robert Blackwell strode into the site. “The great Jackson Hayes, distracted by a librarian while his company’s stock drops.”

“Robert, this is a private project. You’re not welcome here.”

Robert looked at Audrey. “The board might be interested to know how she came to be in charge of this pet project.”

“I earned this position, Mr. Blackwell,” Audrey said firmly. “I’m supremely qualified for it.”

Robert sneered. “Do you really think someone like Jackson stays interested in someone like you once the novelty wears off?”

“That’s enough,” Jackson’s voice cut like steel. “Say what you came to say to me and leave Audrey out of it.”

Robert threatened to block the development unless Jackson reconsidered.

“The project proceeds as planned,” Jackson replied. “And you don’t have the votes, Robert. Not anymore.”

After he left, Audrey asked, “Will he really block your project?”

“No. Because you have changed me for the better. The board sees it too.”

Jackson knelt among the construction materials. “Audrey Wilson, staying in my life has been the most deliberate, wonderful choice. Will you marry me?”

The ring inside was an antique emerald.

“Yes,” she whispered, tears blurring her vision. “A thousand times, yes.”

As he pulled her into a kiss, Audrey marveled at how a blind date gone wrong had led her to exactly where she belonged.

Sometimes, you really do deserve better than what you think you’re looking for. And sometimes, against all odds, you actually find it.
