She was Left Alone on Christmas Blind date —Until a Single Dad Sat with Her and did the unthinkable…
From Pretense to Forever
On New Year’s Eve, Evan admitted his feelings were no longer pretend. Norah felt panic and hope crash together.
“What if nothing bad happens what if we’re allowed to have this?”
The next morning, Marcus showed up at Norah’s school looking sheepish.
“I saw the proposal video i’m sorry I bailed i got scared but I’m ready now can we try again.”
“You’re 3 weeks too late.”
Marcus pointed at her hand and noted the engagement seemed crazy. Just then, the principal announced that Norah’s fiancé was here. Evan was in the hallway with Harper.
“That’s him that’s the guy.”
Norah walked straight to Evan and kissed him in front of everyone.
“What was that for?”
“I’m done pretending this is pretend i’m all in if you are.”
Harper squealed with delight.
“Does this mean you’re really going to be my mom?”
“Yeah baby if that’s okay with you I really am.”
Evan felt something in his chest crack wide open. Later in his truck, they realized they were really doing this with real, terrifying feelings involved.
“My mom left me letters for big stuff dad has them in a box under his bed there’s one that says ‘When daddy starts dating again’ and I want to open it tonight.”
That night, Harper read Lily’s letter out loud. It said loving someone new does not erase her.
“Tell Daddy I said ‘Stop feeling guilty about being happy love doesn’t run out it just grows bigger to make room for everyone love always mommy’.”
Norah was sobbing. Harper climbed into her lap.
“So you’re my bonus mom now i get my first mom in heaven and you here with me?”
“Yeah baby you get both of us your heart’s big enough for all of it.”
They sat on the floor, two broken families figuring out how to be whole together. Two days later, they posted a video explaining the truth. They expected backlash, but the comments were beautiful.
The bookstore fundraiser jumped to $34,000. People were donating more because they told the truth. Three weeks later, Norah took Evan to meet James’ parents.
“Or they’re going to be grateful you’re finally living again.”
James’s mother, Patricia, pulled her into a long hug. She thanked Evan for making Norah smile again. James’s dad, Michael, gave his blessing.
“Our son would want this he’d want Norah laughing and living you have our blessing and then some.”
Patricia gave Evan James’ watch. Four months later, Evan asked Norah for help at the bookstore. She found the place lit with candles.
“I proposed to you once to save you from embarrassment in front of a room full of strangers tonight I’m asking because I can’t imagine my life without you in it.”
“Norah Sullivan for real this time with no audience and no panic and no cameras will you marry me?”
“Yes oh my god yes for real this time i mean every word.”
Harper burst out from behind a shelf, recording the moment. They got married five months later in the bookstore. Harper was the maid of honor.
“James taught me what love looked like and you taught me I could find it twice in one lifetime.”
At the reception, Paige joked about her role in the love story. One year later, Norah and Evan sat at Table 12 for their anniversary.
“Best fake proposal of my life.”
“Best real marriage of mine.”
Under the table, Norah’s hand rested on a small bump. Sometimes being left alone is just the universe clearing space for the right person to sit down.
Norah thought being stood up was rock bottom, but it was actually a launch pad. Families grow and hearts expand. Loving someone new doesn’t mean forgetting someone old.
If you’ve ever been left waiting, it’s not your ending. It’s just your beginning wearing a disguise.
