She Was Rejected on a Blind Date — Until a Billionaire Walked In and Asked Her to Marry Him

From Pretense to Reality

As the dinner concluded, Victoria pulled Jennifer aside.

“You care for him,” Victoria said quietly. It wasn’t a question.

Jennifer’s breath caught.

“I don’t bother denying it. I saw how you looked at him when he wasn’t watching, like you were trying to solve a puzzle. My grandson is brilliant but emotionally guarded. If you’re the one who can breach those walls, you’ll have earned more than my approval.”

The following week passed in a blur. To maintain credibility, they went on “stage dates,” including a brunch in Greenwich Village and a walk through Central Park.

“Tell me something real,” Jennifer said during their third date. “Something not in the official Christopher Hawthorne biography.”

“I wanted to be an architect,” he finally said. “Before my father died and I inherited the company at 26. I’m good at running Hawthorne Industries, but there’s a difference between being good at something and loving it.”

“That’s the saddest thing I’ve heard in a long time.”

He mentioned a past relationship with a woman named Caroline, who had left when he couldn’t choose her over the company. Jennifer realized Victoria was worried about Christopher’s isolation.

The night before the party, at his penthouse, Christopher played a hauntingly beautiful melody on a guitar. The air between them felt charged.

“Tomorrow’s going to be challenging,” he said. “My ex-girlfriend Caroline is back from London. She RSVP’d to the party. She’ll be looking for any crack in our facade.”

“Then we won’t give her any cracks to find,” Jennifer said firmly.

Christopher tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.

“How did I get so lucky to find you that night?”

He leaned closer, and their lips met in a brief, questioning kiss. It wasn’t in the contract.

“I’m sorry,” Christopher said, looking stricken. “That was inappropriate.”

“I kissed you back,” Jennifer interrupted.

The engagement party arrived. Jennifer wore a designer sapphire gown and a stunning Hawthorne heirloom ring. Across the room, she saw Caroline—beautiful and elegant.

“She’s here,” Jennifer murmured.

Caroline approached them, green eyes sharp and assessing.

“Christopher, congratulations. This is quite the surprise. Jennifer, what a pleasure. I must admit I’m fascinated to meet the woman who accomplished what I couldn’t: getting Christopher Hawthorne to commit.”

“Sometimes it’s about timing,” Jennifer said firmly. “Christopher and I met when we were both ready for something real.”

“And how did you two meet?” Caroline asked. “I can’t imagine him taking time to date.”

They told the gallery story. Caroline mused about how much Christopher had supposedly changed.

“When I asked you to make room in your life 2 years ago, you said the company had to come first,” Caroline said to Christopher. “I’m curious what made Jennifer’s request different from mine.”

Jennifer stepped closer to him.

“I never asked Christopher to choose. I understand that Hawthorne Industries is part of who he is. I fell in love with all of him. The difference isn’t that he changed for me; it’s that I never required him to be someone he’s not.”

Christopher looked at her with deep gratitude.

“Excuse us, Caroline. I’d like to dance with my fiancée.”

On the dance floor, Christopher whispered, “That was remarkable. You defended me without making me seem weak.”

“I meant it,” Jennifer said.

After the party, in Victoria’s study, Christopher decided to confess.

“Victoria, there’s something you need to know. Our engagement… it started as a business arrangement. I needed to convince you I was settled, and Jennifer needed financial security.”

Victoria remained oddly calm.

“I see.”

“And you’re confessing this now because it’s not pretend anymore,” Christopher said, looking at Jennifer. “I’ve spent the past 2 weeks falling in love with this woman, and I can’t keep lying to you.”

He turned to Jennifer.

“I’m asking you, Jennifer Morris, not as part of a contract, but as a man who has genuinely fallen for you: would you consider making this engagement real?”

Tears pricked Jennifer’s eyes. Victoria smiled.

“You knew,” Jennifer said. “From the beginning, you knew.”

“Of course I suspected,” Victoria said. “But you were perfect for each other. The merger was always going to go through. I simply provided motivation for you to find what you were both too stubborn to seek on your own.”

Victoria left the room, leaving them alone.

“I fell for you too,” Jennifer admitted. “No more contracts. No more pretending.”

“Deal,” Christopher said, pulling her close for a kiss full of promise.

Three months later, Jennifer stood in her new office space. Her professional life had been transformed by the money, but Christopher had transformed her heart. Her phone buzzed.

“Dinner tonight? I have something important to ask you.”

She typed back, “As long as you promise to actually show up this time.”

“I’ll be the one who can’t wait to see you, always.”

Jennifer looked at her emerald ring, now a symbol of something real. Life had redirected her from rejection to exactly where she belonged. It had all started because she had been brave enough to say yes to a billionaire’s crazy proposal.
