She Worked as a Stylist, Not Realizing the Man in the Chair Was a Billionaire Falling
From Paris with Love
Saturday arrived faster than Violet expected. She’d spent her entire paycheck on a midnight blue evening gown that made her feel elegant and confident.
“It was worth the splurge,” she decided, applying the finishing touches to her makeup.
At precisely 7:00, her doorbell rang. Violet took a deep breath and opened the door to find Kieran standing there in a perfectly tailored tuxedo.
“You look stunning,” he said, his eyes taking in her appearance with obvious appreciation.
“Thank you,” Violet replied, feeling a flutter of butterflies. “You clean up pretty well yourself”.
Kieran offered her his arm. “Shall we?”
The gala was held at the city’s most prestigious hotel, and Violet felt out of her depth on the red carpet. Flash bulbs popped and she heard people calling Kieran’s name.
“Just smile and keep walking,” Kieran whispered in her ear, his hand reassuringly on the small of her back. “They’re harmless”.
Inside the ballroom was a glittering spectacle of wealth and influence. Violet recognized faces she’d seen in magazines and on television.
To her surprise, Kieran kept her close, introducing her to everyone they spoke with.
“This is Violet, the talented stylist who saved me from looking like a disaster at my press conference last week”.
“You’re too kind,” Violet smiled, feeling more at ease as the evening progressed. “Your hair was not a disaster”.
“It would have been if not for you,” Kieran insisted. “I’m convinced your haircut is partly responsible for our stock jump”.
As they mingled, Violet noticed that Kieran seemed most comfortable talking to the event staff. He knew the names of the bartenders, the coat check attendants, and the parking valet.
“You know a lot of the staff here,” Violet observed during a quiet moment.
“I worked as a server at events like this when I was in college,” Kieran explained. “I never forgot how invisible you can feel when you’re the one holding the tray”.
Violet felt a new wave of admiration for him.
“That’s not what I expected from a billionaire tech CEO”.
“What did you expect?” Kieran asked, genuinely curious.
“I don’t know,” Violet admitted. “Someone more arrogant, self-important, out of touch, maybe.” She laughed. “But you’re not like that at all”.
“Money changes a lot of things,” Kieran said, his expression turning serious. “But I try not to let it change who I am”.
As the evening wore on, they found themselves on the terrace away from the crowd. The night air was cool, and Kieran draped his jacket over Violet’s shoulders.
“Are you enjoying yourself?” he asked.
“More than I thought I would,” Violet admitted. “Though I’m pretty sure that woman in the red dress thinks you’ve hired me for the evening”.
Kieran laughed. “Mrs. Harrington thinks everyone under 40 is morally suspect. Don’t take it personally”.
“So this is your world?” Violet gestured to the glittering ballroom. “Charity galas, press conferences, board meetings?”
“Part of it,” Kieran nodded. “But not the part I enjoy most”.
“What do you enjoy most?”
“Creating things. Solving problems,” Kieran said, his eyes lighting up. “The work itself. The rest of this—the money, the recognition—it’s just a side effect”.
“A pretty nice side effect,” Violet teased.
“It has its perks,” Kieran agreed with a smile. “Like being able to ask out beautiful hair stylists who don’t know who you are”.
Violet felt herself blush. “About that, I’m sorry I didn’t recognize you. I’m not very tuned into the tech world”.
“Don’t apologize,” Kieran said, stepping closer to her. “It’s refreshing. Do you know how rare it is for me to have a conversation with someone who isn’t trying to get something from me?”
“I can imagine,” Violet said softly. She was acutely aware of how close they were standing and the warmth radiating from him.
“Can I see you again?” Kieran asked, his voice low. “A real date, not a work event. Just the two of us”.
Violet hesitated only briefly before nodding. “I’d like that”.
Kieran’s smile was immediate and genuine.
“Good, because I’ve been wanting to kiss you all evening, but I didn’t want to presume”.
“I wouldn’t have minded,” Violet admitted, feeling bold.
Kieran didn’t need any further invitation. He leaned in, his hand gently cupping her face as his lips met hers. The kiss was soft at first, but quickly deepened as Violet responded.
When they finally pulled apart, both were slightly breathless.
“Wow,” Violet whispered.
“Yeah,” Kieran agreed, his eyes not leaving hers. “Definitely wow”.
The weeks that followed were a whirlwind. Kieran took her to exclusive restaurants and hole-in-the-wall cafes. They went to art galleries, took walks in the park, and spent hours talking.
Violet found herself falling for the man behind the billionaire facade. This was the Kieran who still coded late at night for fun and called his mother every Sunday without fail.
But dating someone of Kieran’s status came with challenges. Paparazzi began lurking outside the salon, and gossip columns speculated about their relationship, painting Violet as a gold digger.
“I’m sorry about all this,” Kieran said one evening in his penthouse. “I should have warned you better about what it would be like”.
“It’s not your fault,” Violet assured him, though the attention was wearing on her. “I just wish they’d find someone else to obsess over”.
“We could give them something else to talk about,” Kieran suggested, a mischievous glint in his eye.
“Like what?”
“Like the fact that I’m thinking about opening a new Nexus office in Paris. And I’d very much like for you to come with me next month”.
Violet nearly choked on her noodles. “Paris? You want me to go to Paris with you?”
“Why not?” Kieran shrugged. “It would be for a week. You said you’ve always wanted to see the Louvre”.
“I can’t just take a week off work,” Violet protested. “Some of us don’t own the company we work for”.
“I already spoke to Marissa,” Kieran admitted. “She said you have vacation days saved up and she’d be happy to arrange coverage for you”.
“You spoke to my boss?” Violet asked, unsure whether to be touched or annoyed.
“I wanted to make sure it was possible before I asked you,” Kieran explained. “I know how important your career is to you”.
Violet softened. She loved that he always respected her work and never suggested she should quit just because he could support her.
“Paris does sound amazing,” she admitted.
“Is that a yes?” Kieran asked, his face lighting up.
“That’s a yes,” Violet laughed, leaning over to kiss him. “But I’m paying for my own flight”.
“Not a chance,” Kieran argued. “My company jet is going anyway”.
“Of course it is,” Violet rolled her eyes. “How silly of me to forget about your private jet”.
Kieran pulled her into his lap. “One of these days, you’re going to let me spoil you properly without putting up a fight”.
“Don’t count on it,” Violet grinned, melting into his embrace. “Someone has to keep you grounded”.
Paris was everything Violet had dreamed of. They strolled along the Seine, visited the Eiffel Tower, and ate at charming bistros.
Kieran had meetings most mornings, but his afternoons were dedicated to Violet. He took her shopping, though she insisted on only accepting one special dress as a gift.
On their final evening, they had dinner at a restaurant with a view of the illuminated Eiffel Tower. As they sipped champagne, Violet marveled at how her life had changed.
“Penny for your thoughts?” Kieran asked.
“I was just thinking about the first day you walked into the salon,” Violet said. “If someone had told me then that I’d be sitting here with you now, I would have thought they were crazy”.
“And now?” Kieran asked, taking her hand.
“Now I can’t imagine not having you in my life,” Violet admitted. “Which is a little scary, to be honest”.
“Why scary?”
“Because we come from such different worlds,” Violet explained. “Sometimes I wonder if this—us—can really work long term”.
Kieran squeezed her hand. “Do you know what I thought the first time I saw you?”
“That you desperately needed a haircut?” Violet joked.
“That you were the most beautiful woman I’d ever seen,” Kieran said seriously. “Not just physically, but the way you were so passionate about your work. I knew within minutes that you were special”.
Violet felt her cheeks warm. “You couldn’t have known that so quickly”.
“I did,” Kieran insisted. “You don’t care about my money or status. You call me out when I’m being ridiculous. You make me laugh. You remind me of what’s really important”.
“And what’s that?” Violet asked softly.
“Connection. Authenticity. Love”.
Kieran reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box. “Which is why I wanted to ask you something important”.
Violet’s heart began to race.
“Kieran…”
“I know it hasn’t been that long,” he said, opening the box to reveal a diamond ring. “But when you know, you know. And I know that I want to spend the rest of my life with you”.
Tears sprang to her eyes as Kieran dropped to one knee. Around them, other diners began to notice and pull out their phones.
“Will you marry me?” Kieran asked, his voice full of love.
Violet didn’t hesitate. “Yes,” she whispered, then louder, “Yes, of course I will”.
