She Worked Summer at Luxury Resort, Not Knowing the Regular Guest Was a Millionaire Watching Her
Weathering the Storm
The next few days were torturous. Lucas continued his daily routine at the resort and Faith continued hers, but the easy connection had been replaced by awkward silence and averted gazes. Faith threw herself into extra shifts to avoid the heaviness in her chest.
On her one day off, she visited her parents for dinner, seeking the comfort of familiar surroundings. Her mother noticed her distraction immediately. “What’s bothering you, sweetheart?” she asked as they washed dishes together after the meal.
“Nothing important,” Faith lied.
“Does this ‘nothing important’ have a name?”.
Faith sighed, setting down the plate she was drying. “Lucas. He’s a guest at the resort.”. Her mother raised an eyebrow but didn’t comment on the policy breach.
“And he’s leaving soon,” Faith added. “He asked me to go with him to his world.”.
Her mother dried her hands and turned to face Faith fully. “Do you love him?”.
The question caught Faith off guard. Did she? The intensity of her feelings certainly suggested so. “I think I could,” she admitted. “But his life is so different from mine.”.
“Your father and I came from different worlds too,” her mother said. “He was a college professor and I was a waitress who never finished high school. Everyone said it wouldn’t work, but forty years later, here we are.”.
“Because when two people truly want to be together,” she continued, “they find a way to build a world that works for both of them.”.
That night, as Faith drove home, her mother’s words echoed in her mind. Had she been too quick to dismiss Lucas’s offer? Was there a way they could build something together without either of them sacrificing who they were?.
The next morning, Faith arrived at work to find the resort in a frenzy. A hurricane warning had been issued and all guests were being encouraged to evacuate inland. Staff scrambled to secure outdoor furniture and board up windows.
“Have all the guests in the north wing been notified?” Margot asked.
“Almost,” another staff member replied. “Mr. Gray is insisting on staying.”.
Faith’s head snapped up. “I’ll talk to him.”.
She found Lucas on his balcony, watching the darkening sky with fascination. “You need to evacuate,” she said without preamble. “This isn’t a tropical storm. It’s a category 3 hurricane heading straight for us.”.
Lucas turned, his face lighting up at the sight of her. “Faith, I was hoping you’d come.”.
“Not to chat, Lucas! To make sure you leave. It’s not safe here.”.
“I’m not leaving without talking to you properly, without resolving things between us,” he said.
Faith glanced nervously at the ominous clouds gathering on the horizon. “This isn’t the time!”.
“It’s exactly the time,” Lucas interrupted. “I approached this all wrong. I asked you to fit into my life without considering how I could fit into yours.”.
A strong gust of wind whipped between them, emphasizing the urgency. “Lucas, please, we need to go now!”.
He nodded, finally seeming to grasp the seriousness of the weather. “My car is in the underground garage. We can take that inland.”.
They made it to his Aston Martin just as the first heavy raindrops began to fall. As Lucas navigated through increasingly treacherous conditions, Faith directed him toward the evacuation route. Halfway to the interstate, they encountered a fallen tree blocking the road.
“We need to turn around,” Faith said, anxiety creeping into her voice as the wind rocked the car.
Lucas assessed their options. “The road back might be blocked too by now. Is there another way?”.
Faith thought quickly. “My parents’ house. It’s ten minutes from here on higher ground. They have a concrete basement and hurricane shutters.”.
They arrived at the modest two-story home just as the full force of the storm hit. Faith’s parents welcomed them without question, helping them secure the car and get inside before the worst of the hurricane made landfall.
For the next 12 hours, they huddled in the basement as the storm raged above. Lucas sat beside Faith on an old couch, their shoulders touching, listening to the wind howl and the house creak in protest.
“I’m sorry I put us in danger,” Lucas said quietly. “I should have evacuated when they first warned us.”.
Faith squeezed his hand. “We’re safe now. That’s what matters.”.
In the dim light of battery-powered lanterns, Lucas and Faith finally had their conversation. “I don’t want you to give up your dreams, Faith,” Lucas said. “I’ve never felt about anyone the way I feel about you.”.
“I feel the same way,” Faith admitted. “But I was scared. Your world seems so different from everything I know.”.
“Then maybe it’s time for a new world for both of us,” Lucas said, taking her hands. “What if I told you I’ve been looking to expand Gray Maritime’s operations to the Gulf Coast? We could establish a regional headquarters right here.”.
Faith’s eyes widened. “You’d do that? Move your business here?”.
“Parts of it, yes,” he answered. “I travel for work regardless of where my home base is. Being near the person I love seems like a much better arrangement than living across the country from her.”.
“The person you love?” Faith repeated softly.
Lucas’s expression was open and vulnerable. “I love you, Faith. I think I’ve been falling for you since I first saw you helping that elderly couple find their way.”.
Faith’s heart soared. “I love you too,” she whispered, the truth of it washing over her like a wave of certainty.
Their kiss was interrupted by a loud crash from upstairs. Faith’s father’s calm voice followed: “Just a branch on the roof. Nothing to worry about!”.
Lucas laughed, resting his forehead against Faith’s. “Your family is incredible. So steady in a crisis.”.
“We’ve weathered a few storms,” she replied with a smile.
By morning, the hurricane had passed. It left destruction in its wake but spared the Anderson home any major damage. They emerged into the debris-strewn yard, surveying broken branches and scattered roof tiles.
Lucas put his arm around Faith’s shoulders. “What do you say we rebuild together? Not just the storm damage, but something new—something that bridges both our worlds.”.
Over the next year, Lucas did exactly that. He established the Gulf Coast headquarters in Tampa, splitting his time between Florida and his other offices, but making Palm Harbor his primary residence.
Faith started her teaching career at the local elementary school. With Lucas’s support, both emotional and financial, she began developing plans for a preschool of her own.
They were married the following summer at Serenity Shores Resort. Margot, now the general manager, waved all fees in exchange for the publicity of hosting the wedding of shipping magnate Lucas Gray.
“Did you ever imagine this would happen when you assigned me to Cabana 3 last summer?” Faith asked Margot during the reception.
“Honestly, yes,” Margot admitted with a laugh. “I’ve never seen anyone look at anyone the way Lucas looked at you—like you were the answer to a question he’d been asking his whole life.”.
Two years later, on a perfect summer evening, Lucas and Faith stood on the porch of their beachfront home. They watched their one-year-old daughter, Lily, toddle across the sand with determined steps.
“Lily’s going to be a ship captain,” Lucas observed as the little girl pointed at a passing sailboat.
“Or a teacher,” Faith countered, leaning into his embrace.
“Or both,” Lucas suggested. “In our family, we don’t believe in limiting possibilities.”.
Faith smiled, remembering the uncertain young woman who had once served mimosas, never imagining one guest would change her life forever. “No, we certainly don’t,” she agreed.
She stretched up to kiss her husband as the sun set over the ocean. In the distance, Serenity Shores resort glittered like a jewel on the coastline—the place where their story began.
Their journey together was just beginning. It was a voyage charted not by wealth or status, but by the compass of their hearts, navigating toward a shared horizon they once could not have imagined alone.
