She Works At Cafe He Visits Daily, Not Knowing The Billionaire Is Gathering Courage To Ask Her Out

The Fictional Event and a Bold Confession

Then an idea struck him. The next morning, he arrived at Percolate at his usual time. But instead of immediately sitting down, he approached the counter with purpose.

“Morning,” Kayla greeted him brightly, her personal troubles seemingly pushed aside for the workday.

“Good morning,” Liam replied, setting down his briefcase. “I was wondering if you do outside catering events”.

Kayla blinked in surprise. “We do, actually. Nothing huge, but we’ve handled office meetings and small gatherings. What did you have in mind?”.

“My company’s having a client appreciation event next week,” Liam explained, the lie coming easily. “We need coffee service and pastries for about fifty people”.

Her eyes widened. “That’s definitely something we could handle. Let me get you in touch with my manager”.

“Actually,” Liam interrupted gently, “I’d prefer to work with you directly if that’s possible. I trust your judgment on what would work best”.

A pleased flush spread across her cheeks. “Oh. Well, I’d be happy to help coordinate everything. Do you have a budget in mind?”.

The figure Liam quoted was substantially higher than necessary for such an event, and he could see Kayla trying to mask her shock.

“That’s very generous,” she said carefully.

“Quality matters,” Liam replied with a small smile. “And I’ve been coming here long enough to know Percolate delivers on that front”.

They spent the next fifteen minutes discussing details, with Kaylor writing notes on a small pad. When they finished, she handed him her card with the cafe’s information and her cell phone number written on the back.

“For any follow-up questions,” she explained.

Liam tucked the card carefully into his wallet, feeling ridiculously pleased by this small victory. “I’ll call you to finalize everything”.

The next few days brought a flurry of texts and brief calls about the catering job. Each conversation gave Liam a new glimpse into Kayla beyond the barista he’d admired from afar. She was funny, thoughtful, and refreshingly direct.

She didn’t waste words or try to impress him, which ironically impressed him more than any calculated charm could have. What Liam didn’t realize was that Kayla had begun to look forward to their exchanges as well.

There was something about Liam that intrigued her—a quiet confidence that never veered into arrogance and an attentiveness when she spoke that made her feel truly heard.

The morning of the supposed event, Liam arrived at Percolate earlier than usual. Kayla was busy loading catering supplies into the cafe’s delivery van.

“Need a hand?” Liam offered, rolling up the sleeves of his dress shirt.

“I wouldn’t want you to wrinkle that clearly expensive shirt,” Kayla teased. But she accepted his help with the heavier items.

“So, where exactly is this event?” she asked as they finished loading.

Liam hesitated. “The Harbor View Tower downtown. I can text you the specific directions”.

Her eyebrows shot up. “The Harbor View? That’s some serious real estate”.

He nodded noncommittally, then checked his watch. “I should get going to make sure everything’s set up on my end. I’ll see you there”.

As Liam drove away in his sleek Audi, Kayla couldn’t help but wonder about the mysterious regular who had suddenly become more than just the guy who ordered an Americano with an extra shot.

Who was he? What kind of company did he work for that held events at one of the most prestigious addresses in the city?.

Two hours later, Kayla pulled up to the Harbor View Tower, nervously straightening her Percolate polo shirt. A valet approached immediately.

“I’m here for the event on the…” she began.

“Miss Foster, we’ve been expecting you. Please follow me,” the valet said, gesturing to a uniformed attendant who had appeared beside the van.

“We’ll take care of unloading everything,” the attendant assured her. “Mr. Thorne requested that you be escorted directly upstairs”.

“Mr. Thorne?” Kayla frowned slightly. Liam had never mentioned his last name.

The attendant led her to a private elevator that required a key card. As they ascended to the top floor, Kayla’s confusion grew. Something didn’t add up.

The elevator doors opened directly into a stunning reception area with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the harbor. Liam stood waiting, his usual suit replaced by a more casual but equally expensive-looking ensemble.

“Welcome,” he said, his familiar voice a comfort amid the unexpected luxury surrounding her. “I hope finding the place wasn’t too difficult”.

“Liam, what is this?” Kayla asked, looking around. “Where are the fifty people? Where’s the client appreciation event?”.

He had the grace to look slightly embarrassed. “I should explain. There is no event. At least not the kind I described”.

Kayla’s expression hardened. “So this was what, some kind of joke?”.

“No, not at all,” Liam quickly assured her. “Please let me explain properly”. He gestured to a seating area nearby. “Would you sit with me for a moment?”.

Hesitantly, Kayla followed him to a pair of comfortable chairs. The view from here was breathtaking, but she barely noticed it, focused instead on Liam’s face.

“My name is Liam Thorne,” he began. “I’m the CEO of Thorne Maritime International”.

Kayla’s jaw dropped slightly. “The shipping company with, like, a hundred cargo ships?”.

“123, actually,” Liam corrected with a small smile.

“And yes, that one. So your…” Kayla trailed off.

“Wealthy? Yes,” Liam finished for her. “Which brings me to why I created this fictional event. When you mentioned your apartment flooding, I wanted to help, but I knew offering money directly would be inappropriate and probably unwelcome”.

Kayla’s eyes narrowed. “So you made up a catering job as charity?”.

“I made up a catering job because I wanted to give you an opportunity, not a handout,” Liam clarified. “The payment is real, and I’d still like Percolate to provide coffee and pastries, just for a much smaller gathering”.

“What gathering?” Kayla asked, still suspicious.

Liam looked slightly nervous now. “Lunch. Just lunch with me, if you’d be willing”.

Understanding dawned on Kayla’s face. “Wait. Are you asking me on a date under the pretense of a business meeting?”.

“Not my finest moment, I admit,” Liam said, running a hand through his hair.

“I’ve been trying to work up the courage to ask you out properly for months, but it never seemed like the right time, or I’d lose my nerve,” he sighed. “I’m sorry for the deception. It was well-intentioned but misguided”.

Kayla sat back, processing this information. “So all this time you’ve been coming to Percolate every morning because…”.

“Initially for the coffee,” Liam said honestly. “But I kept coming back because of you”.

She looked at him for a long moment, then unexpectedly laughed. “I can’t believe the guy I’ve been daydreaming about for months is actually a billionaire CEO. This is insane”.

“You’ve been daydreaming about me?” Liam asked, hope evident in his voice.

“Don’t let it go to your head,” Kayla warned, but her smile took the sting out of her words. “So, what happens now?”.

Liam gestured toward another room where a small table had been set for lunch. “Now, I was hoping we could have that meal together. Not as a customer and barista, but as Liam and Kayla. And I promise, no more elaborate schemes”.

Kayla considered for a moment, then nodded. “Okay. But on one condition: we use the coffee and pastries I brought. It seems only fair since I hauled them all the way here”.

“Deal,” Liam agreed with a relieved smile.
