She’s With Me, The CEO Says At The Venue Door, And She Realizes She Wants That To Be True
The Promise of Forever
Over the following weeks, they fell into a pattern. Dominic would meet her after work as often as his schedule allowed.
He introduced her to hidden restaurants and she showed him the best bakeries. They texted throughout the day, sharing observations that made them both smile.
Bella met his siblings over brunch. His brother Derek was friendly, while his sister Deanna demanded fashion advice in return for the borrowed dress.
“Keep it,” Deanna insisted. “Any woman who can make my workaholic brother smile like an idiot deserves a dress”.
“I don’t smile like an idiot,” Dominic protested.
Dominic met Bella’s family too. He charmed her mother and spent an hour talking with her father about baseball.
“He’s good people,” her father said. “That young man has character”.
Three months in, Bella realized she was in love with him. It hit her one evening in his kitchen when he splattered tomato sauce on his shirt and laughed.
“Me too,” he said, pulling her into his arms. “Happier than I’ve been in years”.
“Dominic… I’m just really glad you claimed me at that door”.
He kissed her forehead. “Best decision I ever made”.
They made love that night for the first time—slow, tender, and perfect. Afterward, Bella traced patterns on his chest and imagined a future.
But reality intruded. Photographers caught them at dinner and gossip columns speculated about the “new girlfriend”.
One article was subtly condescending, implying she was a social climber. The comments section was brutal.
“Don’t read that garbage,” Dominic said. “They don’t know us”.
“But what if they are right? What if I am out of my depth?”
“Bella, look at me. You are exactly where you should be”.
She wanted to believe him, but doubts grew louder at a charity gala where she overheard two women saying it wouldn’t last.
“Men like Dominic Irving don’t end up with caterers”.
Bella fought back tears. Dominic noticed her withdrawal afterward.
“Talk to me,” he said. “What happened?”
She told him, her voice sounding small. Dominic’s jaw tightened with anger.
“Those women mean nothing to me. You are worth ten of them”.
“But I’m not from your world, Dominic. I don’t know how to navigate the press and the judgment”.
“Then we’ll figure it out together. Bella, I love you”.
“I’ve loved you probably since that first night when you bossed me around. And I don’t give a damn what anyone else thinks”.
“You love me,” she whispered.
“Desperately. Completely. Is that okay?”
“I love you too. So much it scares me”.
He kissed her deep and claiming.
“We’re going to make this work,” he said firmly. “You’re it for me, Bella”.
They became a united front, but six months in, a real problem emerged. The company was expanding to Los Angeles and Dominic needed to spend significant time there.
“Come with me,” he said. “We could get a place in LA”.
“I can’t just leave my job, my family, and everything I’ve built here”.
“I know I’m asking a lot. But being across the country is unbearable”.
They had their first real fight. It ended with both of them frustrated and hurting.
“I need some time to think,” Bella said.
She went home feeling hollowed out. She loved him, but she had dreams of opening her own bakery.
Her mother finally gave her perspective over coffee.
“You’re going to let pride and fear cost you the best thing that ever happened to you. Plans change, honey. Do you want Dominic to be part of your life?”
“Of course I do. But—”
“But nothing. Love is choosing someone else’s happiness alongside your own. Figure out how to build a life together”.
That evening, Bella showed up at Dominic’s apartment unannounced.
“I’m sorry for making this harder,” she said. “We can figure this out together”.
“No, I was being selfish,” Dominic replied. “I talked to my brother. He can oversee most of the expansion. I’ll make this work without asking you to sacrifice your life here”.
“You did that for me?”
“I’d do anything for you. Your dreams matter just as much as mine”.
“I love you so much,” she said.
“I love you too. So if you want to open that bakery, let’s make it happen now. I can help with the capital”.
“I can’t take your money”.
“It’s an investment. I believe in you. Let me be part of making your dreams come true”.
They made plans late into the night. Dominic split his time between New York and LA while Bella planned her business.
He provided support, but insisted all final decisions were hers. Months later, Bella’s Sweets opened in Brooklyn.
The opening was packed. Dominic arrived with flowers and a proud smile.
“Congratulations, Chef. It’s perfect. You’re perfect”.
“I couldn’t have done this without you”.
“Yes, you could have. But I’m so proud to be yours”.
The bakery was a success. Two years after they met, Dominic took her back to the venue. It was decorated with fairy lights and white roses.
“Do you remember what I said that night?”
“‘She’s with me'”.
“Right. And now, you really are with me. I never want that to change”.
He dropped to one knee and opened a velvet box.
“Bella Everett, you fixed me. You showed me what it means to have a partner. Will you marry me?”
“Yes!” she managed through happy tears.
He slid the ring onto her finger. Their families poured in, cheering.
“You’re it for me, Bella. Always have been”.
They were married six months later. During their first dance, Dominic whispered, “Best decision I ever made”.
“Claiming you were with me? Best decision I ever made was believing it,” Bella whispered back.
Five years later, Bella’s Sweets had three locations. Dominic walked through the door at lunchtime with their daughter Bridget and son David.
“Mama!” Bridget squealed.
Bella scooped up her daughter.
“How was the park?”
“We fed the ducks,” Dominic said.
He leaned in to kiss her, soft and familiar. They sat in the back office together, a family of four.
“Just how lucky we are,” Bella said.
“Every single day I’m grateful you crashed my event,” Dominic replied.
“It wasn’t a lie. From that moment on, you were with me”.
“She’s with me.” Three simple words that had opened a door to a wonderful life.
They had chosen each other that very first night and every day since.
“Ready for this afternoon?” he asked. They had a meeting about franchising.
“With you here, I’m ready for anything”.
Later, curled up on the couch, Dominic pulled her close.
“You ever think about that night?”
“Sometimes. It’s strange how one moment can change everything”.
“It was every choice we made to keep showing up for each other,” Dominic said.
“Best choices I ever made,” Bella replied.
She thought back to that young woman at the venue door, desperate to fix a mistake. She’d found a life beyond her wildest dreams.
There would be challenges ahead, but with Dominic, she was ready. Love was about finding someone who saw you completely and chose you again and again.
“She’s with me,” he’d said. He had claimed her heart and changed her life forever.
And she would be with him always, for the rest of their days.
