Single Dad Fixed Woman’s Car on Way to Blind Date—Not Knowing She Was the Date He Dreaded

The Mark of Fate

She looked embarrassed to even be seen. “My car just died,” she said.

“My battery’s gone. My phone is at 5%. And the tow truck said it’ll take 2 hours.”

Her voice cracked. Mark put the car in park, popped the hood.

“I’ll take a look.” The woman hesitated.

“Are you sure? I don’t want to bother you.”

“You’re not bothering me,” Mark said softly. “We’ve all had days like this.”

When she opened the hood, Mark checked the battery, tested a few wires inside. “Your battery’s dead. Yeah, I’ve got cables. I can jump it.”

The relief on her face was instant. But behind it, he saw something else: exhaustion, loneliness, that familiar “I’m trying so hard but everything keeps going wrong” look he knew too well.

“What’s your name?” he asked as he grabbed the cables from his trunk. “Lena. Mark?”

They exchanged a small, polite smile before returning to the task. Mark talked her through what he was doing, not wanting her to feel helpless.

She listened, grateful for the distraction from her frustration. In a few minutes, the engine rumbled to life.

Lena let out a breath and laughed. One of those surprised, relieved laughs that made her shoulders drop.

“I can’t believe this. You just saved my whole night.”

“Happy to help,” Mark said. But as Lena reached for her purse, she froze.

“Oh no, I was already late. I am supposed to be at a blind date right now and this guy is going to think I stood him up.”

“My phone is dying, so I don’t even know if he’s texted.” Mark felt his stomach twist.

“Blind date at the diner down the road?” Her eyes widened.

“Yeah, how did you know?” Mark swallowed.

“You, uh, wouldn’t happen to be meeting a guy named Mark, would you?” The silence that followed was so still it felt like time stopped.

Lena blinked rapidly, then laughed nervously. “No, no way. You’re… you’re helping me with jumper cables. That would be too weird.”

Mark scratched the back of his neck. “Yeah, that’d be me. I am Mark.”

Lena’s jaw dropped. “You? But you’re nice.”

“My coworker said this guy was shy and kind, but I figured I’d get stood up or something.”

“Well,” Mark said, smiling awkwardly. “I wasn’t planning to stand you up, but this is definitely the most dramatic start to a date I’ve ever had.”
