Single Dad Helped His Boss Fix Her Dating Profile — Then She Smiled and Said, ‘Why Not Take Me Out

A Fragile Moment in the Corner Office

The late afternoon sun filtered through the office blinds, casting soft golden stripes across Daniel’s desk. At 53, he’d learned to appreciate these quiet moments. This was the hour after most colleagues had left, when he could finally catch his breath and think about picking up his daughter from soccer practice.

He was gathering his things when he heard it: a soft, frustrated sigh from the corner office. Through the half-opened door, he could see Margaret Chen, his boss of seven years. She was sitting at her desk with her reading glasses perched on her nose, frowning at her phone.

In all their years working together, he’d known her as composed, brilliant, and always three steps ahead. But right now, she looked lost.

“Everything all right, Margaret?”

Daniel asked gently, pausing in her doorway. She looked up, and for just a moment, he saw vulnerability flash across her features before she straightened her shoulders.

“Oh Daniel, I didn’t realize anyone was still here. Just heading out to get Emma.”

He hesitated, then added, “You look like you’re wrestling with something.”

Margaret set down her phone and rubbed her temples. She was 58, elegant in that effortless way some women possess. There was silver threading through her dark hair and laugh lines that spoke of a life well-lived.

“Can I ask you something? And please be honest with me.”

“Of course.”

“My daughter set up a dating profile for me. She means well, but…”

Margaret gestured at her phone helplessly.

“I have no idea what I’m doing. It’s been 12 years since Robert passed. 12 years, Daniel. And suddenly, my children think I need to get back out there.”

She made air quotes with her fingers. This was a gesture so unlike her usual professional demeanor that it made Daniel smile. He stepped into the office, setting down his briefcase.

“May I?”

She handed him the phone. Daniel scrolled through her profile. The photos were formal: one from a company event, another from what looked like a charity gala. Her bio read like a resume: “Successful architect. Enjoy reading and classical music. Looking for someone accomplished.”
