Single Dad Janitor Got Fired by a Billionaire CEO Moments Later, Her Daughter Spoke the Truth
A Father’s Devotion and a Cruel Mistake
Tom Wilson woke up at 5:00 in the morning just like he did every day. The small apartment was quiet and through the thin walls he could hear his neighbor’s alarm clock ringing. Tom stretched his tired muscles and walked quietly to the kitchen.
He had exactly 2 hours before his son David would wake up for school. The coffee maker was old and made strange noises but it still worked. Tom poured water into it and waited for the coffee to brew.
While he waited he looked around their tiny kitchen. The refrigerator was covered with David’s drawings from school. Most of them showed two stick figures standing next to a tall building.
David always drew his father at work even though he had never seen the office building where Tom worked. Tom opened the refrigerator and took out eggs and bread. David needed a good breakfast before school.
Tom had learned to cook simple meals after his wife Maria died 3 years ago. At first everything he made tasted terrible. David would eat it anyway and tell his father it was delicious.
Now Tom could make pretty good scrambled eggs and toast. The coffee was ready. Tom poured himself a cup and sat at the small table. He pulled out a notebook and looked at his budget for the month.
Rent was due in 5 days. David needed new shoes because his old ones had holes in them. The electricity bill was higher than usual because the heater had been running more often. Tom did the math in his head.
His paycheck from Sterling Industries would cover everything but there would not be much left over. He had been working as a night janitor at the company for 3 years.
The pay was not great but it was steady work. Most importantly it meant he could be home during the day when David got back from school. At 7:00 Tom heard David moving around in his bedroom.
Tom quickly put away his notebook and started making breakfast. David came into the kitchen wearing his school uniform. His hair was messy and he was still sleepy.
“Good morning Dad,” David said with a yawn.
“Good morning buddy Did you sleep well?” Tom asked as he put scrambled eggs on David’s plate.
“I had a dream about space I was an astronaut and I found a new planet,” David said sitting down at the table.
Tom smiled. David loved space and science. His teacher said he was very smart and asked good questions in class. Tom hoped David would be able to go to college someday and become whatever he wanted to be.
“That sounds like an amazing dream What did the planet look like,” Tom asked sitting down with his own plate.
David started talking about his dream while he ate his breakfast. He described purple mountains and silver rivers. Tom listened carefully and asked questions. These morning conversations were his favorite part of the day.
After breakfast Tom helped David pack his backpack and walked him to the bus stop. Other parents were there with their children. Some of them wore expensive clothes and drove nice cars.
Tom felt a little embarrassed about his old jacket and worn shoes but David never seemed to notice or care. The school bus arrived and David hugged his father.
“Goodbye Have a good day at school I love you,” Tom said.
“I love you too Dad Have a good day at work,” David replied before getting on the bus.
Tom watched the bus drive away and then walked back to their apartment. He had a few hours to sleep before he needed to leave for work.
Working nights was hard but it was the only way he could take care of David by himself. Tom set his alarm for 4:00 in the afternoon and tried to sleep.
The apartment building was noisy during the day. People walked up and down the stairs and car horns honked outside. Tom had gotten used to sleeping with noise but sometimes it was difficult.
When his alarm went off Tom got up and took a shower. He put on his work uniform: dark blue pants and a matching shirt with Sterling Industries written on the pocket.
The uniform was clean but old. Tom took good care of it because he could not afford to buy a new one. David came home from school at 3:30. Tom made him a snack and helped him with his homework.
David was working on a science project about the solar system. Tom helped him cut out pictures of planets from old magazines.
“Dad do you think people will ever live on Mars,” David asked while he glued a picture of Mars onto his poster.
“Maybe someday smart kids like you might figure out how to make that happen,” Tom said.
David smiled proudly and continued working on his project. At 6:00 Tom made dinner for David. They ate together and talked about David’s day at school.
David told his father about a funny story his teacher read and about playing soccer during recess. After dinner Tom helped David take a bath and get ready for bed.
He read David a story about space explorers and tucked him into bed.
“Will you be here when I wake up tomorrow?” David asked.
He asked this question every night.
“Yes I will be here I will always come home to you,” Tom promised.
Tom kissed David good night and turned off the light. He waited until he was sure David was asleep before he left for work.
The bus ride to Sterling Industries took 40 minutes. Tom sat by the window and watched the city change as the bus moved from his neighborhood to the business district.
The buildings got taller and the cars got more expensive. Sterling Industries was a massive glass building that reached high into the sky.
Tom had been working there for 3 years but he still felt impressed when he looked up at it. Thousands of people worked in the building during the day.
At night it was mostly empty except for security guards and the cleaning crew. Tom used his employee badge to enter the building through the service entrance.
He went to the supply room and gathered his cleaning supplies: a vacuum cleaner, mop bucket, cleaning chemicals, and garbage bags.
Tom started his work on the 10th floor and worked his way up to the executive floors at the top of the building. He cleaned offices, conference rooms, and bathrooms.
He emptied trash cans and vacuumed carpets. Tom took pride in his work. He made sure every office was spotless before he moved on to the next one.
Most nights Tom worked alone. Sometimes he saw other janitors but they usually worked in different parts of the building. Tom liked the quiet.
It gave him time to think about David and plan for their future. Tom had been saving money little by little. He hoped to eventually save enough to take some college classes.
Maybe he could get a better job and give David a better life. It would take time but Tom believed it was possible. By midnight Tom had finished most of the lower floors.
He took the elevator up to the executive level on the 40th floor. This was where the most important people in the company had their offices.
Tom cleaned these offices last because they were the most important. The executive floor was different from the rest of the building. The carpet was thicker and softer.
The furniture was made of expensive wood. There were paintings on the walls that probably cost more than Tom made in a year.
Tom cleaned the conference rooms first then moved on to the individual offices. He was careful not to touch anything on the desks except to dust around them.
Important documents and contracts were often left out and Tom knew he should not look at them.
At around 2:00 in the morning Tom reached the biggest office at the end of the hall. This was the office of Sarah Sterling the CEO of the company.
Tom had never met her but he had seen her picture in the company newsletter. She was young for a CEO probably in her 30s and she had built the company into one of the most successful tech companies in the country.
Tom knocked on the office door even though he knew no one would answer. It was a habit he had developed. He always knocked before entering an office just in case someone was working late.
When no one answered Tom used his master key to open the door. Sarah Sterling’s office was enormous.
It had a huge desk, a sitting area with leather chairs, and floor to ceiling windows that showed the entire city below. Tom started by emptying the trash can and dusting the furniture.
He was careful not to disturb anything on the desk. There were important looking papers scattered across the surface along with a laptop and several thick folders.
As Tom was vacuuming the carpet near the desk he noticed that some papers had fallen on the floor. They must have been blown off the desk by the air conditioning.
Tom turned off the vacuum and looked at the papers. He could see that they had company letterhead and looked important. Tom knew he should not leave them on the floor.
Someone might step on them or they might get lost. He carefully picked up the papers and looked at the desk to see where they might have come from.
There was a stack of similar papers on the left side of the desk. Tom gently placed the fallen papers back with the stack making sure they were lined up neatly.
He was very careful not to look at what was written on them. Tom had just finished putting the papers back when he heard the sound of high heels clicking on the marble floor outside.
Someone was walking down the hallway toward the office. Tom felt his heart start beating faster. The footsteps stopped right outside the office door.
Tom heard the sound of a key being inserted into the lock. The door opened and Tom found himself looking at Sarah Sterling herself.
Sarah Sterling was tall and wore an expensive black business suit. Her dark hair was pulled back in a perfect style and she carried a leather briefcase. She looked tired like she had been working for many hours.
When Sarah saw Tom standing next to her desk with papers in his hands her expression changed completely. Her eyes went wide and then narrowed with suspicion and anger.
“What are you doing in my office,” Sarah demanded her voice sharp and cold.
Tom felt panic rise in his chest but he tried to stay calm.
“I’m sorry Miss Sterling I’m Tom Wilson one of the night janitors I was cleaning your office and I found these papers on the floor I was just putting them back on your desk.”
Sarah looked at the papers in Tom’s hands and then at her desk.
“You were going through my private documents,” she said accusingly.
“No ma’am I wasn’t The papers fell on the floor probably from the air conditioning.”
“I was just putting them back where they belonged,” Tom explained holding out the papers to show her.
Sarah snatched the papers from Tom’s hands and looked at them quickly.
“These are confidential company documents You have no business touching them.”
“I understand that ma’am I was just trying to keep them safe.”
“I didn’t read them or look at what they said,” Tom said honestly.
But Sarah was not listening. Her mind was already made up. In her world of highstakes business deals and corporate competition trust was a luxury she could not afford.
She had built her company by being careful and suspicious of everyone’s motives.
“I want you out of my office right now,” Sarah said her voice getting louder.
“Security will escort you out of the building.”
Tom felt his world starting to fall apart.
“Please Miss Sterling I think there’s been a misunderstanding I was just doing my job I would never try to steal anything or look at private documents.”
“I’ve heard enough,” Sarah said picking up her phone. “I’m calling security.”
Tom watched helplessly as Sarah dialed a number. His mind raced as he thought about David sleeping at home trusting that his father would come back in the morning like he always did.
“This is Sarah Sterling I need security to come to my office immediately.”
“I have an intruder,” Sarah said into the phone.
“Please Miss Sterling I have a son I need this job I’m a good worker Ask anyone,” Tom pleaded.
Sarah hung up the phone and looked at Tom with cold eyes.
“You should have thought about that before you decided to snoop through my private documents.”
Within minutes two security guards arrived at the office. They were big men wearing uniforms and serious expressions.
“Remove this man from the building,” Sarah ordered.
“He’s fired effective immediately Make sure he never comes back.”
The security guards moved toward Tom.
“Come on let’s go,” one of them said not unkindly but firmly.
Tom knew there was no point in arguing anymore. Sarah Sterling had made up her mind and nothing he said would change it.
He picked up his cleaning supplies and followed the security guards out of the office. As they walked down the hallway toward the elevators Tom looked back once at Sarah Sterling’s office.
Through the open door he could see her sitting at her desk already focused on the papers as if nothing had happened.
The elevator ride down to the ground floor felt like it took forever. Tom’s mind was spinning with worry about how he would pay rent and buy food for David.
He had some money saved but not much. It would not last long. The security guards walked Tom to the service entrance where he had entered the building just a few hours earlier.
One of them took Tom’s employee badge and his keys.
“Sorry about this Tom,” the guard said quietly. “You always seem like a good guy.”
Tom nodded and walked out into the cold night air. The city was quiet at this hour with only a few cars on the streets.
Tom stood outside the building where he had worked for 3 years and tried to figure out what to do next. The bus that would take him home would not come for another hour.
Tom sat down on a bench at the bus stop and put his head in his hands. For the first time since Maria died Tom felt completely hopeless.
He thought about David sleeping peacefully at home trusting that his father would figure everything out. Tom had always been able to take care of his son but now he did not know.
He did not know how he would pay the bills or put food on the table. Tom looked up at the Sterling Industries building one more time.
Somewhere high above Sarah Sterling was probably still working surrounded by her important documents and expensive furniture.
She had no idea that her decision had just destroyed the life of a man who had only been trying to help.
The bus finally arrived and Tom climbed aboard. As the bus pulled away from the business district and headed back toward his neighborhood Tom began to think.
He thought about how he would explain to David that everything was going to change.
