Single Dad Janitor Got Stuck with the CEO in an Elevator Then Risked Everything to Protect Her…
The Descent into Darkness
Marcus wiped the sweat from his forehead as he pushed the cleaning cart down the marble hallway of Sterling Corporate Tower. His hands, rough from years of honest work, trembled slightly—not from exhaustion, but from the weight of the eviction notice crumpled in his back pocket.
Three days—that’s all he had left before he and his eight-year-old daughter Emma would be homeless. The overtime shifts, weekend cleaning jobs, and sleepless nights had not been enough to keep up with Emma’s medical bills and the rising rent.
As the elevator doors slid open on the 40th floor, Marcus didn’t expect to find anyone inside. It was past 11 p.m., and the building was usually empty except for security guards and night janitors like himself.
But there she was: Victoria Sterling, the company’s CEO, still in her pristine business suit despite the late hour. Her usually perfect composure seemed frayed around the edges, her phone pressed against her ear as she spoke in hushed, urgent tones.
“I don’t care what the board thinks,” she was saying.
“These layoffs will destroy families. There has to be another way.”
Marcus hesitated at the threshold, his cart blocking the elevator doors. In his three years working in this building, he’d never been this close to the woman whose name graced the company letterhead.
She was younger than he’d expected—maybe mid-30s—with tired eyes that spoke of sleepless nights spent fighting battles he couldn’t imagine. Victoria looked up, noticing him for the first time.
“Oh, I’m sorry,” she said, ending her call.
“Please, come in.”
Marcus maneuvered his cart into the spacious elevator, positioning himself in the corner as Victoria pressed the button for the parking garage. The silence stretched between them, broken only by the soft hum of the elevator’s descent.
Then, without warning, the lights flickered and died. The elevator lurched to a violent stop, throwing both occupants against the walls. In the pitch darkness, Marcus heard Victoria’s sharp intake of breath, followed by the clatter of her phone hitting the floor.
