Single Dad Janitor Tried to Stop His Son from Sharing Cookies — Not Knowing She Was the CEO in Tears
The Wisdom of a Child
“What’s your name, sweetheart?” she asked softly, accepting the cookie with reverence.
“Tyler. This is my daddy, Marcus. He works really hard to take care of me.”
“Sometimes he doesn’t eat lunch so I can have extra, but he thinks I don’t know.”
Tyler’s matter-of-fact statement hit Rebecca like a physical blow. Marcus’s face flushed crimson.
“Tyler—”
“It’s okay,” Rebecca whispered, taking a small bite of the cookie.
It was perfector, not too sweet, clearly made with love and whatever ingredients they could afford.
“This is the most delicious cookie I’ve ever tasted.”
Tyler beamed. “Daddy taught me his mama’s recipe. He says it’s worth more than gold because it’s made with love.”
“Your daddy is very wise.” Rebecca’s voice cracked slightly.
“Tyler, can I ask you something? Why did you want to share your cookie with me?”
The boy tilted his head, considering the question with surprising seriousness.
“Because you look lonely. Lonely hurts worse than hungry. Daddy taught me that too.”
Marcus knelt beside his son, his pride battling with his embarrassment.
“Tyler, we should let the lady—”
“Please,” Rebecca interrupted gently. “Please don’t go. Could you… could you sit with me for a moment, if you have time?”
Marcus hesitated, glancing at his watch. His shift supervisor had given him permission to bring Tyler to work today; the sitter had cancelled last minute.
He couldn’t afford to miss another day. He was already behind on rent, and Tyler needed new school shoes.
“We don’t want to impose,” Marcus said carefully.
“You’re not, I promise.”
Something in her tone made him believe her. They sat together on the bench. Tyler chattered easily about his day at school, his drawings, and his dreams of becoming a superhero like his daddy.
“My daddy saves people,” he announced proudly. “He makes everything clean and safe so sick people can get better.”
Rebecca looked at Marcus with new eyes. She’d walked these halls countless times and seen the night shift janitors working quietly in the background, but she’d never really seen them.
