Single Dad Replaced for Blind Date by Mistake, Until She Stepped in and Revealed as his Old Friend..

Choosing Love and a New Beginning

Thursday night Maya came into the living room where Alec was staring at blueprints without actually seeing them. She climbed into his lap even though she was getting too big for it.

“You and Hannah had a fight,”

“Not a question,”

Alec sighed.

“Yeah baby we did grown-up stuff It’s complicated.”

Maya was quiet for a minute then spoke in a small voice.

“Mom wouldn’t want you to be sad again.”

“She told me before she left that I had to make sure you kept living and you were smiling with Hannah but now you’re not.”

Alec felt his throat close up. His 9-year-old daughter was carrying weight she shouldn’t have to carry. She was worrying about him when he should be worrying about her.

“Sometimes people can’t be together even when they want to be,”

Mia shook her head.

“That’s dumb If you love someone you should fight for them That’s what all the movies say”

Friday morning was Hannah’s deadline to accept the New York job. Alec woke up to find Maya gone.

There was a note on the kitchen counter in Rachel’s handwriting.

“Took Maya for breakfast She had something important to do Don’t freak out”

Alec immediately freaked out. Mia’s note arrived at Hannah’s apartment on Friday morning. It arrived 2 hours before her deadline to accept the New York job.

It came through Rachel who showed up at her door looking guilty and determined.

“My niece made me promise to deliver this,”

Rachel handed over an envelope covered in stickers and Maya’s careful handwriting. It said “to Hannah” with a heart dotting the eye. Hannah opened it with shaking hands.

The words absolutely destroyed her.

“Dear Hannah my dad is sad again like when mom left us But he was happy with you Really happy Please don’t go away forever He’s scared but he loves you I can tell Love Maya”

There was a drawing underneath of three people holding hands. Hannah sat down hard on her couch and just started sobbing. Rachel made coffee and waited.

Finally Hannah spoke through her tears.

“I can’t stay just because a 9-year-old asked me to That’s not fair to her or to me or to anyone.”

Rachel sat next to her.

“You’re right You can’t stay for Maya but you could stay for you You could stay because 20 years ago you loved my idiot brother and you still do And maybe this time you both get it right”

Hannah stared at the letter and at Maya’s drawing. She stared at the future she was supposed to choose in 2 hours.

“He told me to take the job He basically pushed me toward the door What am I supposed to do with that”

“My brother is terrified of losing people”

Rachel said quietly.

“He lost Clare and it nearly broke him Watching her slip away over months not being able to stop it So now he pushes people away first before they can leave him It’s stupid and self-destructive but it’s what he does”

Hannah wiped her eyes.

“So what i’m just supposed to ignore what he said and stay anyway”

Rachel smiled.

“No you’re supposed to tell him what you want and make him fight for it Make him take the risk Don’t make it easy for him”

That same night Alec was sitting at Clare’s grave for the first time in months. Rain was soaking through his jacket but he didn’t care.

He was just sitting there talking to a headstone like that would somehow give him answers.

“I met Hannah again my best friend from high school and I’m falling for her And I messed it up because I’m scared”

His voice cracked saying it out loud.

“She’s leaving going back to New York tomorrow And I told her to go cuz I’m an idiot who can’t handle the idea of losing someone again”

He sat in the rain getting completely drenched.

“Maya misses her I miss her And I don’t know what to do”

A memory hit him so hard he actually gasped. He remembered Clare near the end, holding his hand with what little strength she had left.

“Don’t stop living Promise me you’ll let yourself be happy again Maya needs to see that joy is still possible after loss.”

Alec had promised through his tears. Then he spent four years breaking that promise by just surviving and going through the motions.

Hannah had come back into his life and reminded him what living actually felt like. He stood up with rain streaming down his face mixing with tears.

“I promised you I’d keep living and I’ve been breaking that promise But I’m going to fix it I’m going to fight for this”

Alec drove to Hannah’s apartment at midnight. He took the stairs two at a time. He knocked on her door probably too loud for this time of night.

When she opened it she looked confused in pajamas with red eyes from crying. He just started talking.

“I love you I think I’ve loved you since we were 16 And I was too stupid to realize it And I’m terrified because the last person I loved left me and I barely survived it”

“But you were right I can’t keep living in fear and I can’t let you go without fighting for this”

Hannah just stared at him standing there soaking wet and desperate.

“Alec what are you doing here”

“Don’t take the job”

Hannah’s face fell.

“You can’t ask me to give up my career”

Alec shook his head.

“No I mean take the job Take the amazing job you earned but let me come with you Let me and Maya come with you to New York”

Hannah’s mouth literally fell open.

“What are you talking about you can’t just uproot your whole life your firm Maya’s school everything”

Alec stepped closer.

“My firm’s been wanting to expand for years East Coast presence I talked to my partners We’re opening a New York branch and I’m heading it up”

“You talked to your partners when”

Hannah’s voice came out barely a whisper.

“Two hours ago I called an emergency meeting told them I was opening New York whether they were in or not and they said yes.”

Hannah was crying now.

“Alec you can’t make this decision based on a few months What if it doesn’t work what if we’re making a huge mistake”

Alec took her hands.

“We’ve known each other for 24 years We just took a really long break in the middle”

“And yeah maybe it’s crazy but I’d rather be crazy with you than safe and miserable without you”

“What about Maya”

Alec smiled.

“I showed her pictures of New York told her about the art programs and the museums in Central Park And you know what she said she said ‘If you’re there then she wants to go She actually helped me pack a suitcase tonight like we were leaving tomorrow.'”

Hannah laughed through her tears.

“This is insane People don’t just move across the country after reconnecting for two months”

Alec pulled her close.

“Maybe they should Maybe that’s the whole point Stop overthinking and just choose the thing that makes you happy”

They stood in her doorway with rain falling outside and 20 years of history between them.

“I’m scared.”

“Me too Let’s be scared together.”

They kissed like it was the first time and the thousandth time all at once. Six months later they were living in a Brooklyn brownstone apartment.

Maya was thriving in a new school with an incredible art program. Alex’s New York branch was already profitable and Hannah was starting her dream job.

It felt like all the pieces had finally clicked into place after two decades of being scattered. One weekend in June Alec told Hannah he needed to go back to Portland for something.

He refused to say what and just said “Trust me it’s important.”

When they landed and he drove them to Lincoln High School, Hannah spoke.

“Why are we at our old school?”

Alec parked and took her hand.

“Because this is where it all started This is where we became best friends and I need to do something here that I should have done 20 years ago”

He led her to the football field where they used to hang out after school. He got down on one knee right there on the 50 yard line.

“I wasn’t ready when we were kids I wasn’t the person you deserved But Hannah Hayes you came back into my life and reminded me what it feels like to be alive Not just surviving but actually living”

“And I don’t want to waste another day”

He pulled out a ring.

“Will you marry me will you let me spend the rest of my life making sure you never regret waiting for me to catch up”

Hannah was sobbing and nodding.

“Yes I’ve been waiting 20 years for you to ask Yes Yes Yes”

Maya had been hiding with Rachel behind the bleachers. She came running out screaming with joy. Three months later they got married in Portland at Lincoln High’s old library.

It was now a beautiful event space. They had a small ceremony with just family and close friends. Rachel officiated because she got ordained online specifically for this.

Claire’s parents were there smiling and giving their blessing. Claire’s mom hugged Hannah tight.

“Thank you for bringing him back to life for giving Maya her dad back.”

Hannah’s vows were heartfelt.

“I loved you at 16 I loved you during our 20 years apart and I’ll love you everyday for the rest of our lives Sometimes the long way around is exactly the right way.”

Alex’s vows followed.

“You were my best friend when we were kids You’re my best friend now And I promise to never take for granted the second chance we got.”

Their first dance was all three of them. Maya was between them, holding both their hands and spinning in her flower girl dress. Alec whispered to Hannah.

“Thank you for stepping in that night at the restaurant.”

Hannah smiled.

“Thank you for finally recognizing me.”

They danced while soft rain fell outside the windows because Portland never changed. Their whole messy beautiful story that took 24 years to complete finally came full circle.

It proved that sometimes the person you’re meant to find was there all along. You just weren’t ready to see them yet.

Sometimes love isn’t about perfect timing. It’s about being brave enough to try again when you get a second chance.

Alec thought his story was over and Hannah thought hers was somewhere else. But a mistaken blind date and two decades of unfinished business brought them exactly where they needed to be.
