Single Dad Tutored A Child, Not Knowing The Mom Was A Millionaire Who’d Soon Love Him

An Unexpected Assignment

The desperate ringing of the doorbell jolted Zack Larson from his half-finished coffee and the stack of bills he’d been sorting into two piles: urgent and hopeless. He glanced at the kitchen clock, 6:43 a.m., and winced.

No one brought good news before 7 a.m. on a Tuesday. “Dad, is that the door?” 10-year-old Emma’s sleepy voice called from the hallway.

“Go back to bed, honey. School doesn’t start for another two hours,” Zach said, running a hand through his disheveled dark hair as he headed for the door.

He opened it to find Mrs. Peterson from next door still wearing her nightgown under a hastily thrown-on coat. “Zack, thank goodness. My car won’t start, and my grandson’s having an asthma attack.”

“I need to get him to the doctor right away.” Without hesitation, Zach grabbed his keys from the hook. “I’ll drive you. Let me just tell Emma.”

Twenty minutes later, after dropping Mrs. Peterson and her grandson at the urgent care, Zach raced back home. Emma stood in the kitchen attempting to make herself breakfast.

Spilled cereal created a constellation across the linoleum floor. “Dad, I’m going to be late,” she said, her small face pinched with worry.

“Not on my watch, kiddo.” He helped her finish getting ready while simultaneously throwing on a clean shirt and locating his teaching materials.

Being a single father and a freelance math tutor meant his life was a constant juggling act where he inevitably dropped a ball or two. After dropping Emma at school, he barely made it to his first tutoring appointment.

His student, a high school senior struggling with calculus, looked relieved when Zach finally arrived. “Sorry about that. Family emergency,” he explained, settling into the wooden chair and pulling out his well-worn textbooks.

Teaching math had always been his passion, even if the pay was barely enough to keep a roof over their heads since Melissa had left three years ago. She took her teacher’s salary and left him with full custody.

By the time Zach finished his last scheduled session at 4:00 p.m., he was exhausted. He had exactly 45 minutes to pick up Emma from her after-school program before he’d be charged a late fee.

As he was packing up his materials, his phone rang. “Mr. Larson, this is Westfield Academy. We’ve reviewed your application for the tutoring position and would like to offer you an additional student.”

“It’s a special case of a fifth grader who’s recently transferred to our school. She’s advanced in some subjects but struggling with mathematics.”

“The family is willing to pay double your usual rate if you can start tomorrow.” Zach’s heart raced.

Double his rate would mean groceries without counting pennies. Maybe even starting to chip away at his credit card debt. “I can definitely do that,” he said, trying to keep the desperation out of his voice.

“Excellent. The child’s name is Lily Wright. Her mother requested sessions at their home rather than at the school. I’ve emailed you the address and details.”
