Single dad’s little girl missed her Exam to help a Female CEO—then a helicopter landed in their yard
The Consequence of Kindness
By the time the ambulance arrived, Emily’s exam time had already started. Sam looked down at her, guilt twisting in his chest.
“M, I’m so sorry.” But she wasn’t upset.
She just smiled up at him, rain dripping from her eyelashes. “It’s okay; she needed us”.
The paramedics lifted the woman onto a stretcher. She locked eyes with Emily as they loaded her into the ambulance.
“What’s your name, sweetheart?” “Emily Turner”.
The woman forced a smile through her pain. “I won’t forget that”.
When they got to school, the exam window had closed. Sam tried to explain, but rules were rules.
Emily would have to take a makeup test, which wouldn’t count the same. Sam could see the disappointment in her eyes, even though she tried to hide it.
On the way home, the truck was quiet—too quiet. Sam finally spoke, “I know the exam was important”.
“It’s fine, Dad.” “It’s not fine,” he said, gripping the steering wheel.
“You work so hard.” Emily stared out the window at the passing corn fields.
“Dad, that lady could have died if we didn’t stop”. Sam swallowed hard, “Yeah, yeah, you’re right”.
When they got home, he made her hot chocolate and promised they’d study together for the makeup exam. She nodded, but her mind was somewhere else.
Days passed, and life went on. Sam returned to work, and Emily went back to school.
They didn’t hear anything about the woman they had helped. No updates, no phone call, nothing.
