Single Mom Sat Alone at the Wedding — Until the CEO Appeared and Whispered “Pretend We’re a Couple”

Whispers of the Past and Hidden Truths

As the ceremony began, Meline became acutely conscious of his thumb tracing small circles on the back of her hand. It was oddly comforting, this false intimacy with a powerful stranger.

She spotted Sophia among the junior bridesmaids. She looked suddenly grown up in her pale pink dress and elegantly styled hair.

Their eyes met briefly. Meline didn’t miss her daughter’s curious glance at the man beside her.

Sophia’s eyebrows rose slightly before she continued down the aisle. A small smile played at her lips.

The bride appeared, radiant in an intricate lace gown. Jackson leaned close again as everyone turned to watch Jennifer’s progress.

“Your daughter looks just like you,” he murmured. “Same eyes.”

“Thank you,” Meline whispered. She was surprised by the personal observation.

The ceremony proceeded beautifully. Jennifer and her groom exchanged heartfelt vows that brought tears to Meline’s eyes.

Throughout it all, Jackson’s hand remained wrapped around hers. His presence was strangely comforting in its pretense of familiarity.

During the exchange of rings, Meline felt him stiffen slightly. She followed his gaze to an elegant older couple in the front row.

They were presumably his aunt and uncle, the groom’s parents. The woman was glancing over her shoulder at them with a calculating expression.

“My aunt,” Jackson confirmed quietly when he caught Meline looking. “Already reporting to the family gossip network that I’ve brought a date.”

“Won’t they be confused?” Meline asked. “I’m sure I wasn’t on the seating chart as your plus one.”

“I was supposed to bring someone,” he admitted. “A colleague; she canceled last minute.”

“Family emergency?” Meline asked. “Convenient,” she murmured.

“Fortuitous,” he corrected with a small smile. The newlyweds were pronounced husband and wife, and applause erupted around them.

In the commotion, a distinguished man with silver hair approached them. His eyes were the same steel blue as Jackson’s and alight with interest.

“Jackson, aren’t you going to introduce me to your lovely companion?” His voice carried the polished accent of old money.

“Uncle Richard,” Jackson said, standing and keeping Meline’s hand firmly in his. “This is Meline Porter. Meline, my uncle, Richard Hayes.”

“Porter,” Richard repeated, his gaze sharpening slightly. “Any relation to Thomas Porter?”

The question hit Meline like a physical blow. Thomas, her ex-husband and Sophia’s father, had walked out on them seven years ago.

How on earth would Jackson’s uncle know him? She felt Jackson’s hand tighten around hers in a silent pressure that urged caution.

“My ex-husband,” she answered carefully. “Sophia’s father.”

Something unreadable passed between uncle and nephew. It was a brief look loaded with significance that Meline couldn’t interpret.

“Ah,” Richard said finally. “Small world.”

“I look forward to getting to know you better at the reception, Ms. Porter.” He moved away to join his wife.

“How does your uncle know Thomas?” Meline asked the moment Richard was out of earshot. Suspicion was blooming in her chest.

Jackson’s playful ease was replaced by something more guarded. “That,” he said quietly, “is part of the explanation I owe you.”

He glanced around at the dispersing wedding guests. “But not here.”

“You knew who I was before you sat down,” she realized, trying to pull her hand away. “This wasn’t random at all.”

He didn’t deny it, but he also didn’t release her hand. “I promise I’ll explain everything, but right now everyone is watching.”

“Including your daughter,” he added. Meline looked up to see Sophia standing with the other bridesmaids.

Her gaze was fixed curiously on her mother and the man still holding her hand. Other guests were beginning to file toward the reception area.

“The reception,” Jackson said quietly. “I’ll tell you everything then.”

“If you want me to leave you alone after you hear it, I will.” “No questions asked.”

Meline should have gathered Sophia and left immediately. She should have avoided these uncomfortable revelations and painful memories.

But a gravity in Jackson’s expression kept her rooted in place. “Fine,” she agreed tersely.

“But this better be good.” She had no idea this impulsive agreement would change her life forever.

Jackson Hayes had recognized her name for reasons he hadn’t yet revealed. Those reasons connected their families in ways Meline couldn’t begin to imagine.
