Struggling Dad Flirted With A Woman At A Café, Not Knowing She Was A Billionaire Falling Fast

The Coffee Stain and the Kind Stranger

The coffee dripped from the ceiling fan in steady rhythmic drops. It landed directly onto Carter Zimmer’s already stained shirt. This was the final insult on what had become the morning from hell.

His 5-year-old daughter Lily giggled from behind her chocolate milk. She found her father’s predicament infinitely amusing as they sat in the small corner table of Brewster’s Cafe.

“It’s not funny Liybug,” Carter said.

Though he couldn’t help but smile at her laughter. He dabbed at his shirt with a napkin that was rapidly disintegrating.

“Daddy has a job interview in an hour. You look like the polka dot man from that movie,” Lily said between giggles.

Her brown curls bounced as she rocked in her chair. Carter glanced down at the brown spots decorating his once white shirt. It was the only clean dress shirt he owned.

It had been clean until 10 minutes ago when the cafe’s ceiling fan had mysteriously begun dripping coffee. His interview at Westside Marketing was his best chance at landing a job with benefits.

He desperately needed this since becoming Lily’s sole caretaker after her mother had left them 2 years ago.

“Excuse me,” came a soft voice from above him.

“I noticed your situation. Perhaps this might help”.

Carter looked up to find a woman extending a crisp white handkerchief. His first thought was that nobody actually carried handkerchiefs anymore. His second was that the woman offering it was breathtaking.

She had auburn hair tied back in a simple ponytail and intelligent green eyes. She was dressed in what even his untrained eye could tell was expensive attire. It was understated: a simple cream blouse and tailored pants.

“Oh I couldn’t,” Carter said, feeling heat rise to his cheeks.

“I’d just ruin it”.

“Please I insist,” she placed the handkerchief on the table.

“Besides it looks like you need it more than I do right now”.

Lily leaned forward, suddenly very interested in the stranger.

“My daddy has an important meeting. He needs to look pretty”.

The woman’s laugh was like music.

“Well we can’t have him looking unpretty can we?”

She glanced at Carter’s shirt again.

“Actually a handkerchief probably won’t cut it”.

“I’m Carter,” he said, extending his hand then quickly withdrawing it.

He realized it was sticky with coffee.

“And this is my daughter Lily”.

“Emma Ellis,” she replied, her eyes lingering on his.

“Nice to meet you both”.

“I’m five,” Lily announced proudly, holding up the correct number of fingers.

“Five is a very important age,” Emma said seriously.

“You know I might be able to help with your daddy’s shirt problem. I have a boutique just down the street. We could find him something new to wear for his important meeting”.

Carter immediately shook his head.

“That’s incredibly kind but I can’t accept”.

“It’s not charity,” Emma interrupted, seeming to read his thoughts.

“Consider it a loan. You can return it after your meeting”.

Carter hesitated. His interview was in less than an hour. The apartment was a 20-minute walk away. There was no time to go home and change and he couldn’t show up looking like this.

“Please Daddy,” Lily pleaded.

“The nice lady wants to help and grandma says we should accept help when it’s offered with a pure heart”.

Carter looked from his daughter to Emma who was waiting patiently with a small smile. There was something about her that made him want to trust her.

“Well when you put it that way how can I refuse. Thank you Emma. This is really, it means a lot”.

20 minutes later Carter was standing in front of a mirror. It turned out to be not a small boutique but an upscale men’s clothing store called Ellis and Co.

Emma had insisted on a complete outfit. It was a tailored navy suit that somehow fit him perfectly. There was a new crisp white shirt and a subtle blue tie that Emma said brought out his eyes.

“I can’t possibly accept all this,” Carter protested quietly.

Lily was distracted by the kind sales associate who had offered her a coloring book.

“The shirt would have been more than generous”.

Emma waved away his concern.

“The suit needed a good home. Think of it as rescuing it from the clearance rack”.

He didn’t believe her for a second. The suit was clearly high-end and probably cost more than his rent. But he was running out of time to argue.

“I’ll return it tomorrow,” he promised.

“Keep it,” Emma said simply.

“Consider it good karma. Maybe someday you can help someone else who’s having a rough morning”.

Carter studied her face, trying to understand why a stranger would do this for him.

“Why are you being so kind to someone you just met?”

Emma’s expression softened.

“Let’s just say I recognize determination when I see it. A single father raising a wonderful little girl heading to a job interview despite coffee literally raining down on him. That’s someone who deserves a break”.

Impulsively Carter reached for his wallet. It contained exactly $23 meant to last until the end of the week.

“At least let me buy you a coffee sometime as a thank you”.

A smile spread across Emma’s face.

“I’d like that very much”.

Carter scribbled his number on the back of a business card. It was ironically from his previous employer who had laid him off 6 months ago.

“Here, call me whenever you’re free”.

Emma tucked the card into her pocket. With a final good luck wish she sent him off to his interview.
