Struggling Dad Jumpstarted A Woman’s Car At Night, Not Knowing She Was A Millionaire Falling For Him

The Chance Encounter at Midnight

It was nearly midnight when Rowan Pierce’s rusted-out pickup groaned to a stop beside the sleek black Mercedes with its hood up. Its hazard lights were blinking like a distress signal from another world.

He rubbed the back of his neck, sighing. “Of course it’s a Mercedes,” he muttered, climbing out of his truck.

“Probably someone who’s never changed their own tire let alone jump started a car”. When the driver’s side door opened, a woman stepped out barefoot in a red designer dress.

Rowan’s breath caught as she looked like she belonged on a magazine cover rather than a dark road. “Do you need help?” he asked, trying not to sound like he’d just forgotten how to speak.

She looked up with a calm but frustrated voice. “Yeah, my car died; I think the battery’s shot”.

“Got cables in the back,” he replied, glancing at her bare feet. “You’re not from around here, are you?”

“Depends,” she said and smiled faintly. “Is it that obvious?”

“Just a bit,” Rowan nodded. “I’m Rowan Pierce”.

“I’m Delilah, Delilah Daniels”. He walked back to his truck, wondering what she was doing alone off Highway 17.

She watched him connect the cables, seeing something beyond the oil stains on his shirt. A spark flew, the engine coughed, and the Mercedes roared to life.

“You’re a miracle worker,” Delilah’s eyes lit up. Rowan laughed, calling himself just a guy who has jump-started his own truck many times.

“You always stop to help strangers in the middle of the night?” she asked. He shrugged, mentioning he had a five-year-old at home and hoped someone would help her someday.

“You’re a dad?” she asked as her gaze softened. “Yeah, Naomi; she’s my world”.

“Let me buy you coffee,” she said suddenly as the hum of the Mercedes filled the space between them. Rowan hesitated, but she insisted she was resourceful and had shoes in the car.

Fifteen minutes later, they were in a booth at Lou’s Diner. Her heels were on, but her dress was still too fancy for the fluorescent lights and linoleum floors.

Delilah asked what he did for a living while stirring her coffee. He explained he worked construction by day and did handyman odd jobs at night to pay the bills.

“Naomi’s mom left when she was three; been just us since,” he paused. “I’m sorry,” she said quietly.

He shrugged, noting that Naomi was smart, brave, and sometimes too honest. Delilah grinned, saying she sounded like someone she would like.

“She’d probably ask you if you were a princess,” he said, causing her smile to falter just a little. He then asked what she did for a living.

Delilah hesitated, stating she managed investments and traveled a lot. She admitted she grew up in this town and moved away after college.

“Why’d you come back?” he asked. She looked down, saying sometimes you need to remember where you came from, even if it doesn’t remember you.

They talked about everything and nothing until the sky started to lighten. He thanked her for the coffee, and she thanked him for saving her.

“Will I see you again?” she asked. Rowan gave a half smile, mentioning he was at Lou’s most mornings before work.

Rowan watched her drive away, feeling like his luck was about to change. He didn’t know Delilah Daniels was actually a millionaire CEO of Daniels Capital.
