The carpet was thicker here. The office is quieter.

As Miguel approached Richard’s glass office he noticed the lights were still on. He paused.

Most janitors would clean around the office and move on. This was the CEO’s space Offlimits dangerous.

Miguel gently knocked. No answer.

He knocked again softer still nothing. He peeked inside and saw Richard lying on the couch eyes closed shoes still on.

Miguel frowned with concern. “Senor,” he whispered.

Richard didn’t move. Miguel stepped inside carefully pushing his card aside.

He lowered his voice like one does around someone who might be sick. “Sir I don’t want to scare you but it’s late Are you okay.”

Richard stayed perfectly still. His heart was pounding now.

This was the test. Would the janitor steal Snoops take advantage?

Miguel stood there for a moment unsure what to do. Then he quietly closed the blinds halfway dimming the harsh city lights.

“You’ll sleep better,” he murmured. “That alone surprised Richard.”

Miguel went to the small office kitchen poured a cup of water and placed it on the table near the couch. He straightened the CEO’s jacket that had fallen to the floor and gently placed it over the arm of a chair.

Then before leaving Miguel did something unexpected. He sat on the edge of the couch just for a second.

Richard’s mind raced. This was it The moment of truth.

Miguel leaned forward and whispered “I know what it’s like to be tired in a way sleep doesn’t fix.” Richard’s breath nearly stopped.

Miguel’s voice was barely audible but every word landed like a weight. “I see you walking fast every day always on the phone always carrying the whole building on your shoulders.”

“People think money makes it lighter It doesn’t.” Miguel swallowed.

Richard felt a tightness in his chest. Miguel continued unaware “I don’t know your story sir but I hope you remember you’re human too.”

“Even bosses are human.” He stood up adjusted the jacket once more and whispered the words that froze Richard completely.

“Your kids need you more than this company does.” Miguel quietly left the office.
