Wrong Number Texts Lead to Months of Conversations Before the Billionaire Reveals Who He Really Is

The Billionaire’s Reveal

For the rest of the week Maya was a bundle of nerves. She changed her outfit 17 times on Saturday morning before finally settling on jeans and a soft green sweater that Sarah had once said made her eyes look bright.

She arrived at the cafe 15 minutes early ordered a latte she was too anxious to drink and claimed a table by the window where she could watch for him. The problem was she had no idea what Dominic looked like.

She’d never asked for a photo caught up in the romance of their anonymous connection. Now she realized how impractical that was. She found herself studying every man who walked past the window wondering if each one might be him.

At exactly 1:00 her phone buzzed.

“i’m here blue sweater table by the window”

Maya looked up and saw a man standing near the entrance holding his phone and scanning the cafe. When their eyes met he smiled and Maya felt her breath catch.

Dominic was tall with dark hair and the kind of strong jawline that belonged in cologne commercials. He wore dark jeans and a gray henley that fit him perfectly. When he walked toward her table she noticed several other women in the cafe tracking his movement.

But his eyes were only on her.

“maya,”

He asked even though they both clearly knew the answer.

“dominic?”

She stood up awkwardly not sure whether to shake his hand or hug him or what. He solved the problem by pulling out the chair across from her and sitting down with an easy smile.

“you’re even prettier than I imagined”

She felt her cheeks heat.

“you imagined what I looked like”

“of course I spent way too much time trying to picture the person behind those messages”

His smile turned slightly sheepish.

“i was way off but I’m not complaining”

“how were you off”

“i don’t know i pictured someone different the reality is much better”

They sat there grinning at each other like idiots for a moment before Maya laughed.

“this is so weird right we’ve been talking for months but this feels like a first meeting”

“it is a first meeting just with a lot more context than usual”

Dominic leaned back in his chair studying her.

“it’s strange hearing your voice i’ve been reading your messages in my head for so long i’d invented what you sounded like and also wrong but also better”

They talked for 3 hours. The conversation flowed as easily in person as it had over text maybe even easier. Maya found herself laughing more than she had in months watching the way Dominic’s eyes crinkled when he smiled.

She noted the way he leaned forward when she talked like he didn’t want to miss a single word. He asked about her work at the youth center and she found herself telling him about Marcus, a 15-year-old artist.

She also mentioned Jasmine who had been coming to the center since she was 8 and now volunteered as a high school senior. Dominic listened intently asking thoughtful questions and seeming genuinely interested in the kids’ stories.

When she turned the questions back to him asking about his work in real estate development he was more forthcoming than he’d been over text.

“i focus mainly on mixeduse developments”

He explained residential spaces with commercial ground floors.

“the goal is to create communities not just buildings”

“that sounds ambitious”

“it is and expensive and complicated”

He ran a hand through his hair.

“but when it works when you see people actually living and thriving in spaces you helped create it’s worth all the headaches”

“how did you get into it”

“my father was in construction i grew up on job sites learning how buildings went up from the ground when I was old enough I realized I was less interested in the how and more interested in the why why we build what we build what makes a space work for people how design affects the way we live”

He shrugged.

“real estate development let me ask those questions on a larger scale”

From the way he talked about his work Maya could see the passion behind it. This wasn’t just a job for him; it was something he cared about deeply.

“what’s your current project”

She asked he hesitated slightly.

“it’s a development in Midtown still in the early stages so I probably shouldn’t say too much”

“top secret”

“something like that”

He smiled but there was something guarded in his expression that hadn’t been there before. Maya wanted to push but she also didn’t want to ruin the easy flow of their conversation so she let it go.

She steered the talk back to safer territory. When they finally left the cafe the sun was starting to sink lower in the sky. Dominic walked her to the subway station and at the entrance they stood facing each other awkwardly.

“i had a really good time,”

Maya said.

“me too.”

Dominic reached out and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. The gesture was so natural and intimate that Maya’s heart skipped.

“can I see you again?”

“I’d like that”

“tomorrow.”

Maya laughed.

“Eager”

“very.”

He wasn’t smiling when he said it and the intensity in his eyes made her stomach flip.

“tomorrow works.”

They saw each other the next day for brunch and the day after that for a walk through Prospect Park. Within two weeks they were seeing each other almost every day.

Their texting continued but now it was supplemented with phone calls and evenings spent together. They spent time watching movies on her couch and enjoyed long dinners at small restaurants where they talked until the staff started giving them pointed looks.

Maya had dated before she’d had relationships some serious some casual but nothing had ever felt like this. With Dominic everything was easy. They never ran out of things to talk about.

The silences between them were comfortable rather than awkward. When he touched her even just a casual hand on her back or his fingers laced through hers she felt it everywhere.

“you’re glowing”

Jennifer said at work one morning about 3 months after that first coffee date.

“this guy must be something special”

Maya couldn’t keep the smile off her face.

“he really is”

“when do we get to meet him”

“soon maybe we’re still kind of in our own bubble”

It was true despite how serious things felt between them they hadn’t really merged their lives in the traditional sense. She hadn’t met his friends or family he’d never been to the youth center to see her at work.

They existed in this space that was just theirs separate from everything else. Maya told herself it was romantic they were building their own world together getting to know each other without outside interference.

But sometimes late at night she’d remember Sarah’s warning about not really knowing him and she’d wonder what she was missing. The cracks started to show small at first.

Dominic would cancel plans last minute because of work emergencies. He’d disappear for hours without responding to texts. When she asked about his day his answers were sometimes frustratingly vague.

“i’m sorry”

He’d say after showing up an hour late to dinner.

“things ran long at the office”

“what things”

“just meetings nothing interesting”

She wanted to call him out on it but she also didn’t want to be that girlfriend. She didn’t want to be the one who demanded constant explanations and transparency.

So she’d smile and say it was fine even though a small knot of worry was starting to form in her chest. Things came to a head on a Friday evening 4 months into their relationship.

They’d made plans to have dinner at her apartment. Maya had spent the afternoon preparing his favorite meal: chicken parmesan with homemade marinara sauce. She’d bought wine put on music and was feeling good about the evening ahead.

But 6:00 came and went with no Dominic then 7 then 8. She called twice and both times it went to voicemail her texts went unanswered. By 9:00 Maya had gone from worried to angry.

She ate the now cold dinner alone drank half the bottle of wine by herself and tried not to let the hurt overwhelm her. At 10:30 just as she was about to go to bed her phone rang.

“maya I’m so sorry.”

His voice was strained exhausted her anger wavered slightly.

“where were you?”

She asked trying to keep her tone neutral.

“something came up at work a major problem with one of our projects i’ve been in emergency meetings all evening”

“you couldn’t text not once in four hours”

“my phone died and I didn’t have a charger i know that sounds like a terrible excuse but it’s the truth”

Maya closed her eyes.

“dominic I need you to be honest with me is there something going on that you’re not telling me”

There was a long pause.

“what do you mean”

“i mean you’ve been distant lately secretive you cancel plans you’re vague about work you never let me into certain parts of your life if you’re having second thoughts about us I need you to just say it”

“what no Maya no I’m not having second thoughts”

He sounded genuinely distressed.

“i’m crazy about you you know that”

“then what’s going on”

Another long pause.

“can we talk about this in person tomorrow”

“why not now”

“because it’s complicated and I don’t want to do this over the phone please Maya let me explain everything tomorrow”

She wanted to demand answers now but she was tired and hurt and didn’t have the energy for a long conversation.

“fine tomorrow i’ll come by at noon and Maya I really am sorry about tonight”

She hung up without responding. The next morning Maya woke up with a headache from the wine and a knot of anxiety in her stomach.

She tried to distract herself with cleaning and reading with anything that would make the morning pass faster. However, her mind kept circling back to Dominic’s promise to explain everything.

What was there to explain what had he been hiding? At exactly noon her doorbell rang. She opened it to find Dominic standing there with flowers and a bag from her favorite bakery.

“before you say anything”

He started.

“i know flowers and pastries don’t fix what happened last night but I wanted to show you I was thinking about you”

Maya took the offering silently and stepped aside to let him in. They sat on her couch and she waited for him to speak. Dominic took a deep breath.

“i haven’t been completely honest with you about who I am”

Maya’s heart sank.

“are you married”

“what no god no nothing like that”

He ran a hand through his hair looking more uncertain than she’d ever seen him.

“it’s about my work my family my situation your situation my full name is Dominic Ashford and my family we’re We have money a lot of it”

Maya stared at him.

“okay”

“i’m not just a real estate developer my family owns Asheford Properties we’re one of the largest development companies in the country when I said I was working on a project in Midtown I wasn’t just involved i’m the CEO it’s my company”

The words hung in the air between them. Maya processed what he was saying slowly.

“you’re rich”

She said finally.

“very rich my family has been in real estate for three generations we’re worth billions”

Maya stood up needing to move.

“billions”

“yes”

“and you didn’t think to mention this before now”

“I wanted to at first I didn’t say anything because I like that you didn’t know do you know what it’s like when people find out you have money everything changes they look at you differently they want things from you or they assume things about you”

He stood too moving toward her.

“when you texted me back that first day you had no idea who I was you were just yourself funny smart genuine i fell for that version of you the one who wasn’t trying to impress me or use me for connections or money”

“so you lied to me”

“i didn’t lie i just omitted certain facts”

“that’s basically lying Dominic”

“i know and I’m sorry i should have told you sooner i wanted to tell you so many times but the longer I waited the harder it got and I was scared that if you knew everything would change between us”
