Single Dad Found His Boss Crying—She Looked Up and Whispered, “Be My Date Today

An Unexpected Proposal in the Office

Have you ever had a moment that completely changed the course of your life? A split second where everything you thought you knew suddenly shifted?

Trust me, you’ll want to stay until the very end of this one. James Parker stood frozen in the doorway, his hand still gripping the handle.

Through the crack, he could see his normally composed boss, Eliza Montgomery. Her head was in her hands, her shoulders shaking with silent sobs.

He should leave, as this wasn’t meant for his eyes. But as he began to back away, the door creaked.

Eliza’s head snapped up. Her tear-stained face registered shock then embarrassment.

Before James could stammer an apology, five unexpected words left her lips. “Be my date today, please.”

James had been working at Montgomery Architectural Design for 3 years now. At 34, he was one of the firm’s most talented designers, despite joining the company later than most.

Life had taken him on a different path when his wife died during childbirth. She left him alone with their daughter, Lily.

For 5 years, he’d been both mother and father to her. He navigated the challenges of single parenthood while trying to rebuild his career.

Eliza Montgomery was something of an enigma to everyone at the firm. At 38, she had built her company from the ground up.

She earned respect in a male-dominated industry through sheer talent and determination. She was fair but demanding, warm yet professional.

James had always admired her from a distance. He appreciated how she’d accommodated his need for flexible hours when Lily started kindergarten.

“I’m sorry,” Eliza said quickly, wiping her eyes as James stood awkwardly in her office doorway. “You weren’t supposed to see that; forget I said anything.”

James hesitated, as he’d never seen his boss vulnerable before. “Are you okay?”

Eliza laughed bitterly. “My sister’s wedding is today. I RSVP’d with a plus one months ago when I was still with Richard.”

“He left me 3 weeks ago for his 25-year-old assistant.” She shook her head. “Classic, right?”,

“And now I have to face my entire family. They have been telling me for years that I’m too focused on my career to maintain a relationship.”

James shifted uncomfortably. “I’m sorry to hear that.”

“The worst part is my mother. She’ll spend the entire reception reminding me that at 38, my biological clock is ticking away.”

Eliza’s voice cracked. “I shouldn’t be dumping this on you; it’s unprofessional.”

“It’s human,” James replied softly. Eliza looked up at him, really seeing him for the first time.

“You have a daughter, right? Lily?” James nodded, surprised she remembered.

“She’s eight now.” “You’re a single dad,” Eliza stated.

It wasn’t a question. “How do you do it? Balance everything?”

“Not very gracefully most days,” James admitted with a small smile. “But we manage; Lily’s worth every struggle.”

Something in Eliza’s expression shifted. “Would you… would you really consider being my date today, just for appearance’s sake?”

“I know it’s completely inappropriate to ask, and please feel free to say no. I just…”,

“What time should I pick you up?” James heard himself say before he could think better of it.

The relief that washed over Eliza’s face made something in his chest tighten. “The ceremony starts at 4; it’s at the Westbrook Gardens.”

“I can text you the address.” “I’ll need to find someone to watch Lily,” James said, mentally running through his options.

“Bring her,” Eliza said quickly. “There will be other children there, including my nieces and nephews; she’d be welcome.”

James hesitated. “Are you sure?”

“Absolutely.” Eliza straightened her shoulders, her composure returning.

“Thank you, James. I won’t forget this.”
