Single Dad Found His Boss Crying—She Looked Up and Whispered, “Be My Date Today

A Day at the Westbrook Gardens

As James left her office, he wondered what exactly he’d gotten himself into. He’d never seen his boss as anything other than, well, his boss.

But the vulnerability in her eyes had stirred something in him. It was a recognition, perhaps, of the same loneliness he’d been carrying since losing his wife.

When he picked up Lily from school that afternoon, he tried to explain the situation as simply as possible.

“So we’re going to a wedding?” Lily asked, her eyes lighting up.

“I’ve never been to a wedding before. Can I wear my blue dress with the sparkles?”

“Yes, sweetheart.” James smiled, relieved by her enthusiasm.

“And remember, Ms. Montgomery is my boss, so we need to be on our best behavior.”

“Is she nice?” Lily asked, suddenly serious. James thought about it.

“Yes, she is. She’s strong and smart and kind.”

“Is she pretty?” Lily pressed with the directness only children possess.

James felt his cheeks warm. “Yes, she’s very pretty.”

Lily nodded sagely. “Then I approve.”

James laughed, ruffling her hair. “It’s not like that, Lilyad; I’m just helping her out.”

But as they pulled up to Eliza’s address, a sleek modern townhouse in an upscale neighborhood, James felt uncharacteristically nervous.

When she opened the door, he understood why. Gone was the polished business executive in her tailored suits.

Instead, Eliza wore a flowing emerald dress that complimented her auburn hair. It fell in soft waves around her shoulders instead of its usual tight bun.,

“You look beautiful,” Lily announced before James could speak. Eliza’s face softened as she knelt to Lily’s level.

“Thank you. And you must be Lily; I love your sparkly dress.”

Lily beamed, twirling to show off the full effect. “Thank you for doing this,” Eliza said quietly to James as they walked to his car.

“I know it’s strange.” “Sometimes strange is good,” James replied, surprising himself with his candor.

The wedding venue was spectacular. It was a botanical garden in full bloom, with the ceremony set up under a canopy of flowering trees.

As they approached the gathering crowd, James felt Eliza tense beside him. “There’s my mother,” she whispered.

She nodded toward an elegant older woman who was surveying the guests with a critical eye. “And my sister, the bride.”

Her voice held a complex mixture of love and something else. Perhaps it was envy, or perhaps regret.

“Deep breath,” James murmured, placing his hand lightly on the small of her back. “We’ve got this.”

Eliza shot him a grateful look before plastering on a smile as her mother spotted them.

“Eliza, finally! And who is this?”

Her gaze swept over James and Lily with undisguised curiosity. “Mom, this is James Parker and his daughter, Lily.”

“James, this is my mother, Vivien Montgomery.” “Pleasure to meet you, Mrs. Montgomery,” James said, extending his hand.

Vivien’s handshake was firm, and her assessment was shrewd. “So you’re the one who replaced Richard. Interesting.”

“Mom,” Eliza warned. “What? I’m just making conversation.”

Vivien turned her attention to Lily. “And aren’t you a pretty little thing? How old are you, dear?”

“I’m eight,” Lily answered proudly. “And Ms. Montgomery said there would be other kids here.”

“Yes, your cousins are over by the fountain,” Vivien said, then caught herself.

“Well, not your cousins, of course, but you know what I mean.”

As Lily looked questioningly at her father, James nodded. “You can go play, but stay where I can see you.”

Once Lily had skipped off, Vivien turned her full attention back to them. “So, James, what do you do?”

“He works for me, Mom,” Eliza interjected. “He’s one of our most talented architects.”,

Vivien’s eyebrows rose. “You’re dating an employee? That’s rather unprofessional, isn’t it?”

James felt Eliza stiffen beside him. Before she could respond, he spoke smoothly.

“Actually, Mrs. Montgomery, our relationship developed outside of work. We’ve been very careful to keep things professional in the office.”

Eliza shot him a surprised look, which he answered with a slight smile.

“I see,” Vivien said, though she didn’t sound entirely convinced. “And you’re a single father?”

“Yes,” James said simply, not offering more. “His wife passed away,” Eliza added softly, her hand finding his.

Something in Vivien’s expression softened. “I’m sorry to hear that; it can’t be easy raising a child alone.”

“It has its challenges,” James acknowledged, “but also its rewards.”

The conversation was interrupted by the announcement that the ceremony was about to begin. As they took their seats, Eliza leaned close to whisper.

“Thank you for that. You didn’t have to lie.”

“Sometimes a small fiction is kinder than the truth,” James replied. “Besides, your mother seems formidable.”,

Eliza laughed softly. “You have no idea.”

As the ceremony progressed, James found himself watching Eliza more than the bride.

There was a wistfulness in her expression that tugged at something deep within him.

When the bride and groom exchanged vows, he saw Eliza discreetly wipe away a tear.

Without thinking, he reached over and took her hand. She startled slightly but didn’t pull away.

Instead, her fingers intertwined with his. She held on as if he were an anchor in a storm.
