Single Dad Found His Boss Crying—She Looked Up and Whispered, “Be My Date Today
Complications Worth Having
The reception was held in a glass-walled pavilion overlooking the gardens. As they entered, Lily rejoined them, chattering excitedly about her new friends.
To James’ surprise, Eliza listened attentively to his daughter’s stories. She asked questions and laughed at Lily’s animated descriptions.
“Your boss is nice, Daddy,” Lily whispered loudly as they found their table. “And she smells like vanilla cookies.”
James felt his face warm as Eliza pretended not to hear. A small smile played at her lips.,
The evening progressed more smoothly than James had anticipated. He found himself genuinely enjoying Eliza’s company outside the office.
She was funnier and more relaxed. Still, he could see tension in her shoulders whenever family members approached with probing questions.
During dinner, Eliza’s sister, the radiant bride, stopped by their table. “So you’re the mystery man who’s finally captured my workaholic sister’s heart?”
She studied James with interest. “Catherine,” Eliza warned.
“What? I’m happy for you.” Catherine turned to James.
“You should know you’re the first man she’s brought to a family function in over 2 years.”
“I’m honored,” James said sincerely. He surprised himself with how true it felt.
“And who’s this lovely young lady?” Catherine asked, smiling at Lily.
“I’m Lily Parker,” his daughter answered confidently. “Your wedding is beautiful.”
“I like the flowers in your hair,” Catherine beamed. “Thank you, sweetheart.”
“Maybe someday you’ll be a flower girl in your dad and Eliza’s wedding.” “Catherine!” Eliza exclaimed, mortified.,
James laughed, diffusing the tension. “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.”
As Catherine moved on, he caught Eliza watching him with an unreadable expression.
“I’m sorry about that,” she said quietly. “My family has no concept of boundaries.”
“It’s fine,” James assured her. “Families are supposed to meddle; it means they care.”
“Is that what your family does?” Eliza asked. James’s smile faded slightly.
“My parents passed away before Lily was born. It was just me and Sarah, my wife, and then just me and Lily.”
Eliza’s hand covered his on the table. “I’m sorry; I didn’t know.”
“How could you?” James shrugged. “We don’t exactly share personal stories at budget meetings.”
“Maybe we should,” Eliza said thoughtfully. “Maybe I’ve been too focused on maintaining professional distance.”
Before James could respond, the music changed and the dance floor opened. Lily immediately perked up.
“Can we dance, Daddy? Please?” James smiled at his daughter’s enthusiasm.
“Of course, Lilyad.” As he stood, he turned to Eliza. “Would you care to join us?”,
Something vulnerable flickered across her face. “I’m not much of a dancer.”
“Neither am I,” James confessed, “but Lily will make us look good.”
Lily’s uninhibited joy on the dance floor made their awkward movement seem charming. It was better than clumsy.
James couldn’t remember the last time he’d laughed so freely. He watched his daughter teach his boss elaborate dance moves from a talent show.
When the music slowed, Lily announced she was going to get more cake and darted off. This left James and Eliza suddenly alone on the dance floor.
“We don’t have to,” Eliza began. “May I have this dance?” James asked formally, extending his hand.
After a moment’s hesitation, Eliza stepped into his arms. They moved slowly, a respectable distance between them at first.
As the music continued, that distance gradually diminished. James could feel the warmth of her body against his.
He could smell the vanilla scent Lily had mentioned. “This is nice,” Eliza murmured, her head resting lightly against his shoulder.,
“Yes,” James agreed, surprised by how right it felt to hold her.
“I haven’t thanked you properly,” she said, “for saving me today.”
“You didn’t need saving,” James replied, “but I’m glad I could help.”
Eliza pulled back slightly to look at him. “Why did you agree? You could have said no.”
James considered the question. “I guess I know what it’s like to face difficult family situations alone.”
He hesitated, then decided on honesty. “I’ve always admired you, Eliza, not just as my boss but as a person.”
Something shifted in her eyes. Surprise was followed by a warmth that made his heart beat faster.
“I’ve noticed you too,” she admitted softly. “The way you balance work and fatherhood.”
“How you never complain even when I know things must be difficult. Your talent; your kindness.”
The music was ending, but neither of them moved to break apart. “This complicates things,” James said quietly.
“Yes,” Eliza agreed, “but maybe some complications are worth it.”,
Their moment was interrupted by Lily’s return, her face smeared with chocolate cake. “Daddy, can Miss Montgomery come over for dinner sometime?”
“I want to show her my rock collection.” James looked at Eliza, a question in his eyes.
“I’d love that, Lily,” Eliza said, smiling. “If it’s okay with your dad.”
“More than okay,” James replied, his heart lighter than it had been in years.
As the evening drew to a close, they said their goodbyes to Eliza’s family. To James’s surprise, even Vivien seemed won over.
She pulled him aside to say, “She works too hard. Make sure she remembers there’s more to life than that company.”
“I’ll try,” James promised, realizing he meant it. The drive back was quiet, with Lily dozing in the back seat.
When they arrived, James walked Eliza to her door. “Thank you again,” she said, keys in hand. “Today was unexpected.”
“In a good way, I hope,” James said. “In the best way,” Eliza replied softly.
There was a moment of hesitation. The air between them was charged with possibility.
Then, with a courage James didn’t know he possessed, he leaned forward and kissed her gently. It was brief, a question more than a demand.
When he pulled back, Eliza’s eyes remained closed for a heartbeat longer. When they opened, they held wonder and uncertainty.
“What happens on Monday?” she asked. “When I’m your boss again?”
“We figure it out,” James said simply. “Together.”
Eliza nodded, a small smile playing at her lips. “I’d like that.”
As James drove home with Lily sleeping peacefully, he reflected on the strange turn his day had taken.
What had begun as an awkward favor had somehow opened a door. He thought it had been permanently closed after Sarah’s death.
He didn’t know what would happen next or how they would navigate their professional relationship.
He wondered how Lily would adjust to someone new. He thought about the inevitable challenges ahead.
But for the first time in years, he was eager to find out. Sometimes the most unexpected moments lead to the most beautiful beginnings.
A chance encounter, a vulnerable request, and five simple words: “Be my date today, please.”
