A Poor Dad Helped A Woman Escape A Bad Date, Not Knowing She Was A Billionaire Falling For Him
The Unexpected Hero
Well Turner didn’t expect to play hero that night. He was just a broke single dad trying to make it through his shift without falling asleep on his feet.
“Excuse me,” the woman whispered, her voice tight with panic. She was gripping the edge of the bar, her knuckles white.
“Can you help me please?” Will glanced up from wiping down a glass.
The woman standing in front of him looked like she belonged in a fashion magazine. She had long dark waves, a fitted red dress, and heels that probably cost more than his car.
But her eyes were wide with fear. She kept glancing over her shoulder toward a table in the corner.
“Are you okay?” he asked, lowering the glass. She gave a quick shake of her head.
“He won’t take no for an answer. I told him I was done, but he’s not listening. I don’t want to make a scene.”
Will looked past her. The man she was talking about was sitting alone now, watching her with a smug, possessive look.
Will’s chest tightened. He hated that look.
He’d seen it too many times when his ex left him and their son behind. “I got you,” Will said, setting the glass down.,
“Play along.” She blinked. “What?”
He didn’t give her time to question it. He came around the bar, took her hand, and spoke loud enough for the guy to hear.
“There you are. I was starting to think you ditched me.”
She caught on instantly. “Sorry, traffic was awful.”
Will gave her a gentle smile and leaned in close. “Let’s get you out of here.”
They headed for the back exit. The man at the table stood up, but Will didn’t flinch.
He tightened his grip on her hand and pushed through the swinging door that led to the alley behind the bar. The door slammed shut behind them.
The woman let out a shaky laugh. “Wow, that was incredibly smooth.”
Will shrugged. “He bothering you?”
“Second date. He said all the right things until I got here, then he turned into a complete jerk. He wouldn’t take no for an answer.”
Will studied her for a second. “You okay?”
She nodded. “Thanks to you. I’m Will, by the way.”
She hesitated, then smiled. “Tessa.”
He offered his hand. She shook it.
“Do you want me to call someone for you?” he asked. “An Uber, I’ll be fine. I just needed to get away from him.”,
Will glanced up at the sky. It had started to drizzle.
“Come on, my truck’s around the corner. I’ll drive you somewhere safe.”
Tessa tilted her head. “You don’t even know me.”
“You looked scared. That’s all I needed to know.”
They walked to his battered pickup, and he opened the passenger door for her. The seats were torn, and there was a booster seat in the back.
She glanced at it. “You have a kid?”
“Yeah, Benji. He’s seven. He’s with my neighbor tonight.”
She smiled. “You’re not what I expected.”
“I get that a lot.” They drove in silence for a minute.
“Where do you want me to take you?” he asked. She hesitated.
“Can we drive around a little? I just need to clear my head.”
He looked over, eyebrows raised. “You sure?”
She nodded. “I’ll pay for the gas.”
He chuckled. “No need. I was planning on driving around to stay awake anyway.”
They cruised through the quiet streets of downtown Chicago. She rolled the window down a little, letting the cool air in.
“So Will, what’s your story?” He gave a short laugh.,
“Single dad. My ex ran off to LA to find herself two years ago, left me with Benji and a mountain of bills.”
“I bartend at night and do construction during the day. Not exactly glamorous.”
Her voice softened. “That’s a lot.”
“Yeah, well, Benji’s worth it. He’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”
She smiled. “He’s lucky to have you.”
Will glanced at her. “What about you? What do you do?”
She paused. “I work in finance.”
He nodded, not pushing. He figured she didn’t want to talk about it after the mess of a date she’d had.
They ended up parked by the lake. The city lights sparkled on the water.
“I haven’t done this in forever,” she murmured. “What, just talked with someone real?”
Will looked at her carefully. “You don’t have many people like that around you.”
She shrugged. “People usually want something from me, not me.”
She met his eyes. He smiled. “You needed help. That’s all.”
They sat in silence for a moment, listening to the soft sound of the rain tapping the roof of the truck. “Can I tell you something?” she asked.,
“Sure.” “I didn’t want to go on that date. My assistant set it up and said it was good PR.”
Will frowned. “PR?”
She cleared her throat. “I’m kind of in the public eye.”
He raised an eyebrow. “Like an influencer or something?”
She laughed. “Not exactly.”
Before she could explain, her phone buzzed. She glanced at it inside.
“Everything okay?” “Just my driver. He’s circling the block.”
Will blinked. “Driver?”
She looked at him, then reached into her purse and pulled out a sleek black card. “I’m not just in finance. I run a firm, R&R Holdings. I’m the CEO.”
Will stared at her. “Wait, R&R? That’s…”
He let out a low whistle. “You’re Tessa Reigns.”
She nodded. He leaned back in his seat.
“You’re a billionaire.” She winced slightly.
“I usually don’t lead with that.” Will let out a slow breath and chuckled.
“Well, I guess that explains the dress.” She laughed with him, but her smile faded.
“Does it change things?” He thought for a second.
“I don’t care about the money, if that’s what you’re asking. You needed help. I’d do it again.”
Her expression softened. “You don’t know how rare that is.”,
He shrugged. “You’re just a person to me. A woman who needed out of a bad situation.”
She looked at him for a long moment. “You’re different.”
He grinned. “I get that a lot.”
She bit her lip. “Can I see you again?”
Will blinked. “Seriously?”
She laughed. “You think I’m not serious?”
“I just thought… I mean, you’re rich.”
She teased, “Yeah, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want something real.”
He studied her face. “You really want to see me again?”
She nodded. “I really do.”
He smiled then. “Yeah, I’d like that.”
She reached over and touched his hand. “Thank you for tonight.”
Will looked at their hands, then up at her. “You’re welcome, Tessa.”
Neither of them said anything after that. The silence wasn’t awkward; it was full of something new, something unexpected.
For the first time in a long time, Will felt like something good was finally starting.
