CEO Fires Single Dad For Sleeping On The Job — Then She Saw Who He Was Protecting

The Midnight Dismissal

2:47 a.m. Veronica Hartwell’s heels echoed through the empty lobby. She should have been home, but the reports couldn’t wait.

Then she saw him: the janitor, slumped in a chair, head back, eyes closed, asleep. Veronica stopped. A cold judgment settled in.

This was why companies failed. People getting paid to do nothing. She tapped his shoulder.

“Excuse me.” James jolted awake. “I… What?”

“You’re sleeping on company time.” Her voice was ice. “You’re fired. Hand over your badge.”

“Ma’am, please, just let me explain.” “There’s nothing to explain.”

“I have a daughter,” he said, desperate. “I need this job.”

“You should have thought of that before falling asleep.” She turned away. “Security will see you out.”

James’s face collapsed. He removed his badge, hand shaking. “I’m sorry,” he whispered, not angry, just broken.

He walked into the night, shoulders hunched, carrying shame he didn’t deserve. Veronica watched him go, satisfied, certain, righteous.
