I Supported My Broke Ex, Then Dated A Billionaire — Only To Learn The Same Painful Lesson Twice

Part 2

He looked uncomfortable immediately.

“It’s not like that,” he muttered.

“Then what exactly is it like, Brian?”

I demanded.

“She just wants clarity.”

I laughed painfully at the word.

“You came here because you knew I loved you enough to still say yes.”

That sentence hit him hard because deep down, he knew I was right.

The apartment fell silent again.

I wiped my tears and told him to give me the number.

My voice sounded empty now, like someone emotionally giving up.

I stared at the phone number for almost twenty minutes before finally pressing call.

My hands would not stop shaking.

He sat quietly across from me on the couch, watching nervously.

The call rang twice.

Then a woman answered.

“Hello?”

I closed my eyes briefly.

“Hi.

My name is Megan.”

There was immediate silence on the other end.

Then the woman spoke carefully.

“You’re Brian’s ex?”

The word ‘ex’ felt like a knife to my chest.

Still, I forced myself to continue.

“Yes.”

Quietly, I told her that Brian and I were no longer together.

She hesitated before asking if there was anything still going on between us.

I glanced at Brian, who could not even look me in the eyes.

“No,” I whispered softly.

“There isn’t.”

She let out a relieved breath and thanked me for being honest.

After the call ended, the apartment became painfully quiet again.

He rose from the couch and offered a muttered word of thanks.

I stared at him, my mind unable to process his casual tone.

“Thank you?

That was all you had to say after everything?”

He snatched his jacket from the armchair.

“I know this wasn’t easy.”

I finally looked at him with tears burning in my eyes.

“I would never have done this to you,” I said quietly.

“No matter how unhappy I was, I would never have made you feel this disposable.”

He looked away immediately.

Because people look away when guilt becomes too heavy to carry.

I folded my arms tightly around myself.

“You know what hurts the most?

I really thought you loved me.”

He looked genuinely ashamed, but it was way too late.

He finally walked toward the door.

“I hope someday you find somebody who loves you the way you deserve,” he said before leaving.

I laughed softly through my tears.

“Yeah.

I hope so, too.”

That night, I sat alone on the bathroom floor crying until sunrise.

Not because I lost him, but because I finally understood that you cannot heal people who are comfortable breaking your heart.

Two years passed, and I completely rebuilt my life in a new city.

I got a new apartment, a new job, and finally put distance between myself and the past.

I started working for one of Craig’s luxury hospitality companies in New York.

Craig was a billionaire, polished, successful, and disciplined.

He was nothing like Brian.

But as I would soon discover, his incredible wealth was just a beautiful mask hiding the exact same cruel emotional distance.

When I accidentally unlocked his phone and saw the damning messages from Brenda, I had to make a terrifying choice—would I let another emotionally unavailable man destroy my soul, or was I finally ready to walk away for good?
