My Boss Demanded I Stop Working Fast And Wanted Me Fired — Then The Department Head Found Out

Part 1
I just started a new work from home role recently.
It felt like a huge win after months of searching.
The pay was decent and the hours fit my schedule perfectly.
A small part of my daily responsibilities involved tedious data entry.
The volume of information I had to process was absolutely staggering.
Because of the sheer amount of data, it was incredibly easy to make mistakes.
I have ADHD, which makes focusing on repetitive tasks a real challenge for me.
I know my brain is prone to making silly, careless errors when I get bored.
I desperately wanted to find a foolproof system to minimize these mistakes.
Losing this job over a typo was not an option.
I decided to rely on my background in programming.
I spent my evenings building a custom Python script to handle the entry.
It was designed to check if a specific entry had already been created.
Then it would verify the exact numbers by pulling data from a secondary tab.
Finally, it would automatically create the new entry in the main database.
I tested it rigorously to ensure it wouldn’t mess up the company records.
It did the job flawlessly and incredibly quickly.
What used to take hours was suddenly taking a fraction of the time.
I was so proud of what I had accomplished.
I felt like I was bringing real value to my new team.
During a team meeting, I decided to show this to my manager.
I had casually mentioned it to him previously, hoping he would be impressed.
His initial response was a flat, unimpressed grunt.
Then his eyes narrowed as he stared at my shared screen.
He asked if I was running the automation program right then and there.
I smiled, completely missing the danger in his tone.
I told him I was just running the final part manually so I could verify its absolute accuracy.
I wanted to ensure everything was perfect before letting it run fully unattended.
His face suddenly flushed with a dark, angry red.
He slammed his hand on his desk, the sound echoing through the microphone.
He ordered me to stop running it right that very second.
I was completely flabbergasted by his extreme reaction.
I immediately stopped what I was doing and stared at his video feed.
I am usually quite bad at reading facial expressions.
But even I could tell he was absolutely fuming with rage.
I tentatively asked him if there was some kind of problem.
He leaned closer to his camera, his voice dripping with venom.
He told me that if I wasn’t going to do my job properly, I shouldn’t be working there.
My heart plummeted into my stomach.
I desperately asked him what he meant by that accusation.
I tried to explain that the script was doing the job significantly faster and better than a human could.
He scoffed loudly, crossing his arms over his chest.
He demanded to know what I was going to do with all my newfound free time.
He accused me of planning to go run personal errands while on the clock.
He asked if I was just going to sit around all day doing nothing while getting paid.
Mind you, my day is already incredibly busy.
The manual data entry usually takes me two to four agonizing hours.
That massive chunk of time severely limits what else I can accomplish in a day.
Since I only work part-time, my hours are precious and limited.
I had brought the script up specifically because it freed up time for other important tasks.
I calmly told him I figured I would use the extra time to help out my coworker.
She had been absolutely swamped with an overwhelming backlog of requests.
I thought teamwork and initiative were supposed to be valued traits.
His eyes bulged in fury as he interrupted me.
He practically yelled that helping her was not my job.
He explicitly stated that my only job was manual data entry.
He called my actions a display of blatant insubordination.
Then he dropped an absolute bombshell on me.
He claimed that using artificial intelligence to do my job was a fireable offense.
I stammered, trying to explain the basic technical details.
I repeatedly told him it was not artificial intelligence at all.
It was just a simple automation script running basic logic checks.
He absolutely refused to listen to a single word I said.
He muted me on the call before I could finish my sentence.
Then he promptly ended the meeting without another word.
I sat in my home office in stunned, terrifying silence.
A few minutes later, an ominous email popped into my inbox.
Now I have a mandatory meeting scheduled with human resources tomorrow morning.
The subject line just says it is to discuss my ongoing employment.
I am absolutely terrified that I am going to be fired for trying to be efficient.
I cannot afford to lose this job right now.
I am dreading walking into that virtual meeting room.
I keep wondering if they will even give me a chance to demonstrate the code.
I feel completely betrayed by a manager who should have been supporting me.
What will I say to human resources to save my job?
