My daughter banned me from her wedding but invited her deadbeat dad to walk her down the aisle

A Lifetime of Fatherhood and the Unexpected Dinner Request

My daughter banned me from her wedding but invited her deadbeat dad to walk her down the aisle so I canceled the $50,000 payment. Hello, Reddit Eyes Plus here.

For over 20 years, I’ve been in Amanda’s life. I married her mother when she was barely five.

From the moment she held my hand at our wedding, I vowed to love and protect her like my own. I was there for every scraped knee, every late night fever, and every school play.

She played a tree or a background character, and I was cheering like she was the star. Her biological father, Frank, was barely in the picture.

He’d pop in once every few years promising grand gestures but never following through. Child support was a joke.

Phone calls were inconsistent at best. Still, I never spoke ill of him as I wanted Amanda to form her own opinions.

When she was 16, he didn’t even show up for her birthday. She cried on my shoulder that night, sobbing about how she wasn’t important to him.

I assured her she was loved. When she graduated high school, I was the one who threw the party.

I paid for the cap and gown and took her and her friends out to celebrate. Frank sent a vague “Congrats, kid” text a week later.

Still, I was there through college applications, through heartbreaks, and through every milestone. So when Amanda announced her engagement last year, I was thrilled.

I had always dreamed of walking her down the aisle. I dreamed of having that special moment and telling her how proud I was before giving her away to the man she loved.

When I offered to pay $50,000 toward her wedding, I did it happily. A month before the wedding, we were having a family dinner.

Amanda hesitantly said, “Um, I need to tell you something.” I smiled, “Anything, sweetheart.”

She avoided eye contact and took a deep breath. “So I’ve decided to have Dad walk me down the aisle.”
