Rebuilding From Rock Bottom
For 2 years I was a ghost in their lives. Just a name on the child support check.,
I heard from a mutual friend that Brad had moved in. They were playing house.
My son was calling him dad. That part nearly broke me, not going to lie.
I hit a dark place. Therapy, some long nights with too much whiskey and thoughts I don’t care to revisit.
But you know what they say about rock bottom—it makes a good foundation.
So I rebuilt. I got my own place.
Small, nothing fancy. Got promoted at work.
Started hiking again. Got a dog.
Yeah, my dog this time. Her name’s Lucky.
And she doesn’t care if I work late as long as I come home and rub her belly.
Then one day out of the blue, 3 years after the divorce, I get a text from Laura.
“Hey can we talk?” At first I thought it was a mistake but then I checked her profile.
New last name, gone. Photos with Brad, all deleted.
I ignored it. Next day another message.
“I’m sorry. I know I hurt you. I made a mistake. Please call me.”
I’ll be honest, I was curious, so I called.
Turns out good old Brad had cheated on her with someone younger.
