Poor Single Dad Missed Interview to Help a Woman – She Turned Out to Be the CEO Who Changed His Life
The Choice on the Curb
Steam curled into the air from the engine and the smell of burnt oil lingered. People streamed past her with eyes down and earbuds in. Not a single one stopped to help.
Daniel slowed. His mind screamed, “You don’t have time. You can’t risk it.” But his feet didn’t listen.
“Need a hand?” he asked, stepping closer. She looked up, startled then relieved.
“Yes please, I’m completely stranded and I’m already late for a meeting.” Daniel set his folder down on the curb and popped the hood the rest of the way.
“Looks like your radiator’s overheated.” “Let it cool and I’ll see if I can get it running again.”
As he worked, she hovered, explaining how she’d been driving to the other side of the city when the car suddenly shuddered and stalled. Her voice carried a polished confidence, but her hands trembled slightly as she spoke.
It took nearly 15 minutes of tinkering, coaxing, and a bit of luck, but the engine sputtered to life. “You’re a lifesaver,” she said, smiling for the first time.
Daniel glanced at his phone. His bus was gone. His interview start time was now.
Even if he sprinted, he wouldn’t make it. Still, he waved her thanks aside. “Glad I could help. Just drive safe, okay?”
When he got home that night, Lily ran to him with her sketch pad. “Look, Daddy! I drew us in our new house.”
Daniel smiled but it didn’t reach his eyes. “It’s beautiful, sweetheart,” he said softly, kissing her forehead.
He didn’t tell her that he’d missed the interview or that the rent was due in 2 weeks. He didn’t tell her he had no backup plan.
