She Grabbed the Wrong Hand to Save Face… But That Stranger Was a Billionaire in Disguise!
The Fateful Encounter
The Grand Metropolitan Hotel sparkled like a jewel in the heart of the city. Crystal chandeliers hung from gold-painted ceilings. They cast warm light across marble floors that reflected the elegance of the evening.
Sophia Rivera stepped through the massive glass doors, her heart pounding against her ribs. The black dress she wore was borrowed from her roommate, Nenah. Though it fit perfectly, she felt like an impostor among the wealthy guests who moved with practiced grace.
Tonight was the annual charity auction hosted by her company, Peterson Marketing Group. As a junior marketing assistant, Sophia rarely attended high-profile events. However, her supervisor had insisted that all staff members show their faces to support the company’s image.
She clutched her small purse tighter, reminding herself that she only needed to stay for an hour. She would smile politely and then escape back to her comfortable apartment. The main ballroom buzzed with conversation.
Women in designer gowns glided between tables. Men in expensive suits discussed business deals over champagne. Sophia found a quiet corner near the silent auction displays, hoping to blend into the background.
She picked up a bid sheet for a weekend spa retreat out of nervousness. The starting price was more than her monthly rent.
“Well, well, look what the cat dragged in.”
The familiar voice made her stomach drop. She turned slowly to see James Mitchell approaching with a smug grin. Her ex-boyfriend looked exactly the same as when they had broken up two years ago.
He had perfectly styled brown hair and an arrogant smile that made her skin crawl. Behind him walked his current girlfriend, a tall blonde model named Victoria. The woman clung to James’ arm like a designer accessory with a practiced smile.
“Sophia Rivera,” James said loudly, drawing attention from nearby guests. “I didn’t expect to see you at an event like this. Can you actually afford to be here?”
Heat rushed to Sophia’s cheeks as several people turned to watch. Their expressions ranged from curious to amused. She straightened her shoulders, trying to project confidence she didn’t feel.
“Hello, James,” she replied, keeping her voice steady. “I’m here with my company.”
“Your company?” He laughed, the sound sharp and cutting. “Oh right, you’re still working at that tiny marketing firm. What do you do there again? Make coffee and answer phones?”
Victoria giggled beside him, though her eyes remained cold.
“James told me all about you,” she said in a syrupy voice. “It’s so sweet how you’re still trying to make it in the business world.”
The small crowd around them grew larger. Sophia recognized a few faces from her company, including her supervisor, Mr. Peterson, who watched with a frown. She felt exposed and vulnerable, like a small animal surrounded by predators.
“Actually,” Sophia said, lifting her chin. “I’ve been promoted to account coordinator. I handle three major clients now.”
James’s smile widened.
“Account coordinator? How impressive. I’m sure that promotion came with a huge salary increase. What are you making now? 30,000 a year?”
The number was close enough to sting. Sophia felt her confidence crumbling as more people gathered. She noticed phones being raised discreetly, probably recording the encounter for social media. Her heart raced as panic began to set in.
“Some people,” James continued, his voice carrying across the space. “Never learn to reach for what they can actually achieve. They keep grasping for things beyond their station.”
In that moment of complete humiliation, Sophia saw a hand extended near her. Without thinking, driven by pure instinct and desperation, she reached out and grasped it firmly. The hand was strong, warm, and steady.
She felt an immediate sense of relief as fingers closed around hers with gentle pressure. She looked up to see who had offered this unexpected lifeline.
The man standing beside her was tall with dark hair and piercing blue eyes. His suit was impeccably tailored, speaking of wealth and status. His expression was calm and unreadable. There was something commanding about his presence.
“Sorry I’m late, darling,” he said smoothly. His voice carried a warm tone that surprised her. “Traffic was terrible.”
Sophia blinked in confusion, but the man’s hand tightened slightly around hers as a silent message to play along. She found herself nodding, though her voice caught in her throat.
James’s confident expression faltered. His eyes narrowed as he studied the stranger who had appeared seemingly from nowhere.
“And you are?”
The mysterious man turned his attention to James, his gaze cool and measuring.
“Daniel Blackwood,” he said simply.
A ripple of recognition passed through the crowd as whispers began immediately.
“That’s Daniel Blackwood, the tech billionaire. His company just went public last month. It’s worth over two billion.”
Sophia’s hand trembled in Daniel’s grip. She realized what had just happened. She had grabbed the hand of one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the country.
Daniel Blackwood was a legend in the tech industry. He was known for building a global empire from a college dorm room. His face had been on magazine covers and his story was taught in business schools.
James’s face had gone pale. The arrogant smirk disappeared completely, replaced by a look of shock and fear. Victoria stepped closer to him, her own confidence shaken.
“Mr. Blackwood,” James stammered. “I didn’t realize you knew Sophia.”
Daniel’s expression remained neutral, but he positioned himself protectively in front of her.
“Sophia and I have been seeing each other for several weeks now,” he said with casual certainty. “She’s been helping me with some marketing consultation for my latest venture.”
The lie rolled off his tongue so smoothly that even Sophia almost believed it. The crowd murmured with renewed interest. Phones appeared again, but this time to capture the billionaire and his mysterious companion.
“I see,” James said weakly. His earlier confidence had evaporated completely.
“Is it?” Daniel asked, raising an eyebrow. “Sophia is brilliant at what she does. Any smart businessman would want her expertise.”
Sophia felt warmth spread through her chest. Even though she knew it was all an act, having someone defend her abilities felt wonderful after years of James’ put-downs.
“We should probably find our table,” Daniel said, glancing down at Sophia with what appeared to be genuine affection. “The auction is about to begin.”
She nodded, still too stunned to form words.
As they walked away from the group, she heard the excited chatter that erupted behind them. James’ voice was notably absent from the conversation. Daniel led her to a prime table near the front of the room.
As they sat down, the weight of what had happened began to sink in. She had been claimed as the girlfriend of one of the richest men in the city. The absurdity of it made her head spin.
“Thank you,” she whispered, finally finding her voice. “I don’t know why you helped me, but thank you.”
Daniel turned to look at her, his blue eyes studying her face with interest.
“You look like you needed rescuing,” he said quietly. “I know what it feels like to be the target of someone’s cruelty.”
“But you’re Daniel Blackwood,” she said, confusion evident in her voice. “Who could possibly be cruel to you?”
A shadow passed across his features.
“Wealth doesn’t protect you from everything,” he replied. “Sometimes it makes you an even bigger target.”
The auction began, but Sophia found it difficult to concentrate. Her hand still tingled where Daniel had held it. She couldn’t stop stealing glances at the man who had turned her evening upside down.
Every time she caught him looking back at her, her heart skipped a beat. As the evening progressed, she noticed the whispers and stares from other guests.
Some looked envious, while others seemed curious or suspicious. She realized that by tomorrow her name would probably be splashed across gossip websites as the mystery woman who captured a bachelor’s attention.
The thought both thrilled and terrified her.
