She Grabbed the Wrong Hand to Save Face… But That Stranger Was a Billionaire in Disguise!

The Fake Proposal

When the auction ended, Daniel stood and offered her his hand once again. This time she took it without hesitation. They walked together toward the exit, past James and Victoria, who watched with amazement.

Outside the hotel, cool night air washed over them. The city lights twinkled like stars and the sound of traffic provided a distant hum. Daniel turned to face her, his expression serious now that they were away from the crowd.

“I suppose I should explain myself,” he began.

Sophia shook her head.

“You don’t owe me any explanations,” she said quickly. “You saved me from complete humiliation. I’m grateful, truly.”

“Even so,” he continued. “What happened in there will have consequences. By tomorrow, every gossip column in the city will be speculating about us. Are you prepared for that?”

Sophia considered his question. Her quiet, ordinary life was about to be turned upside down. As she looked at this man who had protected a stranger, she felt hope.

“I think I can handle it,” she said, surprised by the strength in her own voice.

Daniel smiled then. It was the first genuine smile she had seen from him all evening. It transformed his entire face, making him appear younger and more approachable.

“Good,” he said. “Because I have a feeling this is just the beginning.”

Sophia woke up the next morning to the sound of her phone buzzing relentlessly. Sunlight streamed through her window. For a moment, she wondered if the previous night had been an elaborate dream.

Then she saw the notifications flooding her screen. There were dozens of missed calls, text messages, and social media alerts. Her roommate, Nina, burst through the bedroom door with a laptop.

“Sophia, you need to see this right now!” Nina said, bouncing on her feet. “You’re famous!”

Sophia sat up and looked at the laptop screen. There, on multiple gossip websites, were photos of her and Daniel Blackwood.

The headlines made her stomach flutter with excitement and dread. “Mystery Woman Captures Billionaire’s Heart.” “Who is Daniel Blackwood’s New Love Interest?” “The Cinderella Story That Has Everyone Talking.”

“Oh my god,” Sophia whispered, covering her face. “This is really happening.”

Nina sat on the edge of the bed with an expression of awe and concern.

“Sophia, some of these articles are calling you his secret girlfriend. They’re saying you’ve been dating for months. How is this possible? Yesterday you were complaining about being single.”

Before Sophia could answer, her phone rang. The caller ID showed an unknown number. She hesitated before answering.

“Hello, Miss Rivera? This is Rebecca Chen from Celebrity Weekly Magazine. We’d like to schedule an interview about your relationship with Daniel Blackwood. We’re prepared to offer you $50,000 for an exclusive story.”

Sophia ended the call without responding. Almost immediately, the phone rang again. This time it was a different reporter offering even more money.

“I can’t handle this,” she said to Nina. “This is insane. I barely know the man. Now the entire world thinks we’re in love.”

As if summoned by her panic, her phone buzzed with a text message from an unknown number.

“This is Daniel. We need to talk. Can you meet me at Riverside Cafe on Fifth Street in an hour? Come alone.”

Sophia stared at the message, her heart racing. Part of her wanted to ignore it, but she knew that was impossible now. Her quiet life was over for the foreseeable future.

An hour later, she walked into Riverside Cafe. It was a small, cozy place tucked away from the main shopping district. Daniel was already there, sitting in a corner booth wearing dark sunglasses.

When he saw her approaching, he stood up and pulled out her chair. The gesture was simple but thoughtful, reminding her of his protection the night before.

“Thank you for coming,” he said as they sat down. “I imagine this morning has been overwhelming for you.”

“That’s an understatement,” Sophia replied, glancing around nervously. “I’ve had seven reporters call me before noon. Someone even showed up at my apartment building.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“I’m sorry about that. I should have anticipated the media frenzy. My life is constantly under scrutiny, but I didn’t think about how that would affect you.”

A waitress approached their table, clearly recognizing Daniel. She tried to act casual while glancing at them as she took their coffee orders.

“So what happens now?” Sophia asked once they were alone. “Do we hold a press conference and tell everyone it was all a misunderstanding?”

Daniel was quiet for a long moment, studying her face.

“We could do that,” he said finally. “But I have a different proposal.”

“What kind of proposal?” Sophia asked, her pulse quickening.

“The media attention isn’t going to disappear overnight,” Daniel explained. “Even if we deny everything, they’ll keep digging. Reporters will harass you and photographers will follow you.”

“And your ex-boyfriend will probably sell his story to the highest bidder.”

The mention of James made Sophia’s stomach turn. She could imagine him giving interviews, painting himself as the victim and her as a gold digger.

“If we let people believe we’re actually dating, I can protect you from the worst of it,” Daniel continued. “My security team can make sure you’re safe, and my publicist can control the narrative.”

Sophia blinked in surprise.

“You’re suggesting we fake a relationship?”

“I’m suggesting we let people think what they already think,” he said carefully. “For a few months, until the interest dies down. In exchange, I’ll make sure you’re compensated for any inconvenience this causes.”

“Compensated?” The word came out sharper than she intended. “You think I’m worried about money?”

Daniel raised his hands in a gesture of peace.

“I didn’t mean to offend you. I just know that your job might be affected by all this attention. I want to make sure you don’t suffer financially because of my actions.”

Sophia looked at him carefully. Despite his power, there was something vulnerable in his expression. She realized he was as uncomfortable with the situation as she was.

“Why would you want to do this?” she asked. “You could date anyone you want. Why pretend to be with someone like me?”

“Someone like you?” Daniel repeated, his eyebrows rising. “What does that mean?”

“You know what I mean,” Sophia said. “I’m nobody special. I work at a small firm. I live in a tiny apartment and shop at discount stores. Last night was the most expensive event I’ve ever attended.”

Daniel leaned forward, his voice becoming intense.

“Do you want to know what I saw last night? I saw a woman who handled public humiliation with grace. I saw someone who didn’t fight back with cruelty. I saw strength.”

Their eyes met across the small table. Sophia felt something shift between them. This wasn’t just about convenience anymore. A genuine connection was forming.

“If I agree to this,” Sophia said slowly. “What would it involve exactly?”

“Public appearances together,” Daniel explained. “A few dinners, maybe attending events as my date. Nothing too demanding, and absolutely nothing you’re not comfortable with.”

“And in private?”

“In private, we’re just two people getting to know each other,” he said with a slight smile. “No pressure, no expectations. Just honesty.”

Sophia thought about her alternatives. She could weather the storm alone or move to another city. Or she could trust this man who had already shown her more kindness than her ex-boyfriend ever did.

“Okay,” she said finally. “But I have conditions.”

Daniel nodded, encouraging her to continue.

“First, no one else can know it’s fake. Not your friends, not your business partners, nobody. If we’re going to do this, we have to sell it completely.”

“Agreed.”

“Second, I keep my job and my apartment. I don’t want to become dependent on you.”

“Of course.”

“And third,” she paused, gathering her courage. “When this is over, we end it cleanly. No drama, no hard feelings. We both walk away and pretend this never happened.”

Something flickered across Daniel’s face at that last condition.

“Understood.”

They shook hands across the table. Sophia felt a jolt of electricity at the contact. She told herself it was just nerves, but deep down, she knew it was something more.

Three days later, Sophia was in a luxury car heading to an exclusive restaurant. Daniel had insisted on taking her shopping first, claiming the paparazzi would expect his girlfriend to dress the part.

Now she wore a stunning navy blue dress that cost more than her monthly salary. She felt like she was playing dress-up in someone else’s life.

“You look beautiful,” Daniel said as they pulled up. “Are you ready for this?”

Sophia took a deep breath and nodded. Camera flashes exploded as they stepped out. Photographers shouted questions while security guards kept them at a safe distance.

Daniel’s hand found hers immediately, warm and steady. He guided her through the chaos with practiced ease, his body shielding her from the worst of the attention.

Inside the restaurant, they were seated at a private table. The atmosphere was intimate with soft lighting and quiet music.

“Does it ever get easier?” Sophia asked, still feeling shaky.

“You learn to ignore it,” Daniel replied. “After a while, it becomes background noise.”

Sophia found herself relaxing. Daniel was an attentive listener, asking thoughtful questions about her work and dreams. He seemed genuinely interested in her opinions on topics beyond business.

“Tell me about your family,” he said over dessert.

“Not much to tell,” Sophia replied with a shrug. “My parents divorced when I was 12. My mom moved to Florida and my dad travels constantly. I mostly raised myself.”

“That must have been difficult.”

“It taught me to be independent,” she said. “What about you? I’ve read about your company, but they never mention your family.”

Daniel’s expression grew guarded.

“My parents died in a car accident when I was 25,” he said quietly. “I was just starting my business then. It nearly destroyed me.”

“I’m sorry,” Sophia said, reaching to touch his hand. “That must have been terrible.”

“It was,” he admitted. “But it also taught me that success means nothing if you don’t have people to share it with. I forgot how to build relationships while focusing on my company.”

There was something raw and honest in his voice. Sophia realized that despite his success, Daniel was as lonely as she was.

Their peaceful evening was interrupted when Sophia’s phone buzzed. Her face went pale as she read a message from an unknown number.

“What’s wrong?” Daniel asked.

Sophia showed him the message: “Enjoying your new sugar daddy? Don’t think this will last. I know who you really are, and soon everyone else will too. J.”

Daniel’s expression darkened.

“He’s trying to intimidate you.”

“He’s succeeding,” Sophia admitted. “James never could stand to lose. If he thinks I’ve somehow won by being with you, he’ll do everything to destroy it.”

“Let him try,” Daniel said firmly. “I told you I would protect you. I meant it.”

As they left, Sophia couldn’t shake the feeling that James was planning something worse. Despite Daniel’s reassurances, she wondered if a billionaire’s resources could stop her ex-boyfriend’s vindictive nature.

The fake relationship was becoming more complicated by the day. Real feelings were developing between two people who had agreed none of this was supposed to be real.
