The Disastrous Date and an Unexpected Intervention

Waitress had only $3 on New Year’s Eve date, but the single dad next table stepped in and changed everything.

Before we continue, please tell us: where in the world are you tuning in from? We love seeing how far our stories travel.

Maya Torres sat on her bed on New Year’s Eve at 6:30 in the evening, staring at her phone screen. It showed her bank account balance of exactly $3.47, and she wanted to cry.

She had a first date in one hour at Bella Vista. This was the upscale Italian restaurant where she literally worked as a waitress.

Her date, Kevin, had specifically chosen that place.

“Don’t worry it’s my treat.”

Maya had assumed this meant he was paying for everything. She’d just paid her rent two days ago, which took $1,200 plus utilities and her car insurance.

She also paid the minimum payment on the credit card she’d maxed out last month when her car needed emergency brake repairs. Now, she had $3.47 to last her until payday on January 2nd.

Maya looked at herself in the mirror wearing the one nice dress she owned. She thought about texting Kevin to cancel or suggest somewhere cheaper.

However, her coworker and best friend, Rosa, had set this up. Rosa had been begging Maya to go on a date for six months.

“You’ve been alone for two years you deserve to have some fun.”

Maya grabbed her purse with the $3 in it and drove to Bella Vista. She hoped that Kevin really did mean he was paying. If not, she was about to be humiliated in front of every single person she worked with.

Across town, James Sullivan, who everyone called Jaime, was buckling his seven-year-old daughter, Brooke, into the car.

“I know it’s New Year’s Eve but we’re still doing our Friday tradition right you still want Italian?”

“Yes I want to see Miss Maya she’s my favorite she always remembers that I like extra cheese on my pasta.”

Jaime smiled because they’d been going to Bella Vista every Friday for the past 2 years. Maya Torres had been their waitress probably 90% of those times.

She was so good with Brooke and so genuinely kind. Jaime always left her a 50% tip because he could tell she was struggling, even though she never complained.

Jaime was a construction foreman who owned a small crew. His wife, Lisa, had died from cancer three years ago, leaving him to raise Brooke alone.

Their Friday dinners at Bella Vista had become a sacred tradition. It made them both feel normal.

They walked into the restaurant at 7:15. Brooke immediately looked around.

“Where’s Miss Maya i want her to be our waitress.”

“Honey it’s her night off she’s not working tonight.”

That’s when he saw Maya sitting at the bar. She looked nervous in a dress he’d never seen her wear.

“There she is she looks like a princess why is she all fancy?”

They got seated at a table near the bar. Jaime couldn’t help watching Maya. She looked beautiful but also uncomfortable.

She checked her phone every few minutes and glanced toward the door with growing anxiety. At 7:30, a guy in an expensive suit finally walked in.

He went straight to Maya without apologizing for being 30 minutes late. Jaime could tell immediately this guy was a tool.

He didn’t pull out Maya’s chair. He started talking about himself before she’d even gotten a word in.

Their table was close enough that Jaime could hear bits and pieces of the conversation.

“So you’re a waitress that’s cute is this like a temporary thing or are you trying to do something real with your life?”

Maya’s voice was quiet.

“I’ve worked here for 2 years i actually really like it”

Kevin laughed a condescending laugh.

“Don’t you want to do something real with your life? More though like something that requires an actual degree”

Jaime’s jaw clenched because he could see Maya’s face fall.

“Daddy why is that man being mean to Miss Maya?”

“I don’t know sweetheart but it’s not okay.”

They watched the date continue getting worse. Kevin ordered the most expensive wine without asking Maya what she wanted.

He talked over her every time she tried to speak. He checked his phone constantly. Jaime was getting more and more angry on Maya’s behalf.

The worst part came when the check arrived. Kevin looked at it and spoke loud enough that half the restaurant could hear.

“So we’re splitting this right it’s called equality welcome to the modern world.”

Maya’s face went completely white. She opened her purse with shaking hands.

Jaime watched her count out money. Then, her face just crumbled.

“I thought you said this was your treat i have $3 i just paid my rent yesterday all my cards are maxed or empty i don’t have anything until payday.”

Kevin’s voice got even louder.

“You came on a date with $3 what kind of person does that this is absolutely embarrassing did you expect me to pay for everything like we’re in the 1950s”

He threw a $100 bill on the table.

“That’s my half you figure out the rest.”

He literally just walked out of the restaurant. He left Maya sitting there with tears streaming down her face.

The entire restaurant had gone silent watching this scene unfold. Maya worked here; everyone knew her. Jaime could see her dying inside from the humiliation.

Brooke was tugging on Jaime’s sleeve.

“Daddy daddy Miss Maya is crying that man made her cry we have to help her.”

Jaime was already standing up. There was no way he was sitting there watching this woman get treated like garbage. She had been nothing but kind to him and his daughter.

He walked over to Maya’s table and said her name gently. She looked up and saw him and Brooke standing there.

“Mr sullivan I’m so sorry you had to see that i’m so embarrassed i work here and everyone just watched me get dumped because I’m broke”

Jaime sat down across from her without asking. He pulled out his wallet and put a $100 bill on the table.

“This covers your half of the bill and that guy is an asshole you deserve so much better than that.”

Maya tried to push the money back.

“I can’t take your money you don’t have to do this.”

“Maya you’ve been serving me and Brooke every Friday for 2 years you’ve never once made us feel like anything less than valued customers that guy just humiliated you for being broke and I’ve been broke it’s not shameful it’s just life”

Brooke climbed into the chair next to Maya.

“Don’t cry Miss Maya that man was really mean and stupid you’re the nicest person ever.”

Maya laughed through her tears and hugged Brooke.

“Can I ask you something did you actually eat dinner or were you too nervous?”

“I didn’t order anything i was too anxious.”

“Then join us we haven’t ordered yet please have dinner with us i’m not taking no for an answer it’s New Year’s Eve and nobody should be alone and upset.”

Maya looked between Jaime and Brooke.

“Why are you being so nice to me you don’t owe me anything.”

“Because three years ago when my wife died someone helped me when I needed it most and I promised myself I’d pay that forward whenever I could so please just have dinner with us.”
