She had only $3 on new year’s eve date—but the single dad next table stepped in and changed…
Struggles, Pride, and the Fear of Losing Everything
They moved to Jaime’s table and ordered food. Maya finally relaxed and started smiling.
Brooke talked non-stop about school and her friends. She talked about how she was going to stay up until midnight for the first time ever.
The conversation flowed easily. Jaime found himself watching Maya laugh at Brooke’s stories.
He realized he was attracted to her in a way he hadn’t been since Lisa died. When midnight approached, they went outside to watch the fireworks.
“Are you going to kiss Daddy at midnight Miss Maya that’s what people do on New Year’s.”
Both adults laughed and turned red.
“How about I just ask if I can take you to coffee sometime like an actual date where I pay and nobody humiliates you.”
“I’d really like that Mr sullivan.”
“Call me Jamie mr sullivan makes me feel old.”
They watched the fireworks together. They thought that maybe the worst date of Maya’s life had turned into the beginning of something incredible.
Jaime and Maya went on their first official coffee date three days after New Year’s Eve. They sat in a corner booth at a local cafe for four straight hours.
They talked about everything from their childhoods to their biggest fears. They discussed what they wanted their lives to look like in five years.
Maya told him about her controlling ex-boyfriend. He had slowly isolated her from all her friends over three years.
When she finally got the courage to leave him, her parents had actually sided with him. They said she was throwing away a good man.
She moved to Chicago with $800 in her pocket and a car that was already falling apart.
“I’ve been building my life from absolutely nothing for two years now and yeah I’m still basically broke and working doubles just to survive but I’m really proud of what I’ve done because I did it completely alone.”
Jaime reached across the table and took her hand.
“You should be proud what you’ve accomplished takes serious guts most people would have given up or gone crawling back but you’re out here making it work even when it’s impossibly hard.”
He told her about Lisa dying from ovarian cancer three years ago after a brutal 18-month fight. He had been raising Brooke alone while trying to run his construction business and not completely fall apart.
“Those Friday dinners at Bella Vista became our lifeline it was the one normal thing we had when everything else felt broken and you were always so genuinely kind to Brooke you have no idea how much that mattered to me watching someone treat my kid with real warmth instead of pity.”
Maya’s eyes got wet.
“I always loved when you two came in brooke lights up the whole room and you’re such a good dad i could see how much you loved her in every interaction.”
They started dating officially in January. Everything felt easy and natural in a way neither of them had experienced before.
They’d meet for coffee between Maya’s double shifts and talk for hours. Jaime would bring Brooke to Bella Vista every Friday.
Maya would join them at their table after her shift ended, still in her work uniform. Brooke was absolutely over the moon that her dad was dating her favorite waitress.
By February, Maya was spending entire weekends at Jaime’s house. She helped Brooke with art projects and cooked family dinners.
She felt like maybe she’d finally found a place where she belonged. Everything fell apart in April.
Maya’s car made a horrible grinding noise in the Bella Vista parking lot and died completely. The mechanic said the transmission was shot and it would cost $800 to fix.
Maya sat in that parking lot and cried because she didn’t have $800. She barely had $80.
Without a car, she couldn’t get to work. This meant she’d lose the income she desperately needed to survive. Jaime offered immediately to pay for the repairs.
“I can’t let you do that i can’t be that girl who takes money from her boyfriend i need to be able to handle my own problems.”
“How are you going to handle it if you can’t physically get to work?”
“I’ll figure it out i always figure it out i’ll take the bus and pick up extra shifts and save up the money.”
She ended up taking two different buses to get to work. This added 90 minutes to her commute each way.
She was pulling doubles almost every day to try to save money faster. This meant she was working 14-hour shifts and barely sleeping.
Jaime watched her run herself into the ground and felt completely helpless. One night in early May, she was at his house and fell asleep mid-sentence at 8:30.
She was so exhausted her body just shut down. Jaime carried her to the guest room and she didn’t even wake up.
“Daddy is Maya okay she looks really tired all the time like she’s sick.”
“She’s working too hard baby she’s trying to save money for her car and she won’t let me help her.”
The breaking point came in mid-May when Maya caught the flu from being so run down and exhausted. She had to call out sick for an entire week.
This meant she lost close to $500 in wages and tips that she desperately needed. Her rent was due June 1st.
When she did the math, she was $300 short. She tried to negotiate with her landlord.
He reminded her she’d been late twice before and had already received a final warning. By June 5th, there was a 3-day eviction notice on her apartment door.
Maya was having a full panic attack trying to figure out if she could get a payday loan or pawn something. Jaime showed up at her apartment to check on her.
He saw the bright orange eviction notice taped to her door.
“Maya why didn’t you tell me you were this far behind on rent i could have helped you i would have helped you in a heartbeat.”
“Because I don’t want your help i need to be able to take care of myself i can’t depend on someone else.”
But Jaime had already pulled out his phone. He found the landlord’s payment portal information from the eviction notice and paid her entire rent balance.
Maya found out the next morning when her landlord called to confirm receipt of payment. She drove straight to Jaime’s house, absolutely furious.
“You paid my rent behind my back after I specifically told you I didn’t want your help how could you just completely ignore what I said?”
“You were about to be evicted and homeless i wasn’t going to stand by and watch that happen when I had the ability to stop it”
“That wasn’t your decision to make i’ve been taking care of myself for 2 years i can’t just start depending on you what happens when you leave and I’m back at square one with nothing?”
Jaime felt like she’d physically hit him.
“When I leave you actually think I’m just going to abandon you?”
Maya’s voice was shaking.
“Everyone leaves eventually Jamie my ex left my parents chose his side over mine lisa died and you lost her even though you loved her people don’t stay and I can’t build my entire life on someone who might disappear tomorrow”
“So you’re pushing me away first that’s your strategy you’re so terrified of being hurt that you’d rather be alone.”
“I’m protecting myself i’ve worked too hard to rebuild my independence from nothing to lose it all over again by depending on someone”
“Acepting help when you need it doesn’t make you weak Maya it makes you human but if you want to do everything alone for the rest of your life then fine i won’t stand in your way.”
