My step Daughter Said I Was Embarrassing and Uninvited Me—So I Cancelled the Caterer and Flowers
The Years of Support and a $15,000 Gift
My stepdaughter said I was embarrassing and uninvited me. So, I cancelled the caterer and flowers she never paid for.
Hello Reddit i plus here. I married my wife Sarah when her daughter Lily was 14.
Her dad wasn’t in the picture. He left when she was barely five.
I didn’t try to be her dad; that title’s sacred. But I was the guy who made her school lunches.
I taught her how to change a tire. I showed up to every damn piano recital.
I waited in the car when she had her first awkward dates. I was the guy who stayed always.
Still, I always felt like the placeholder. I felt like the family friend who just happened to live there.
I hoped that would change as she got older. I hoped that one day she’d look at me like I was something more.
She’s 26 now, engaged to this guy Evan. He is a nice enough dude, a little dull but harmless.
They’ve been together since college. When they announced the engagement, I was genuinely happy for her.
I even teared up a little when she asked if I’d help her with the wedding planning. Now Sarah and I aren’t rich, but we’re comfortable.
When Lily came to us with this Pinterest board fantasy wedding and some steep vendor estimates, I said I’d help cover some of it.
“Caterer? Got it. Flowers? I’ll handle it.”
Total cost came to about $15,000. I told her, “Don’t worry about it call it a gift.”
I meant it. For the past 6 months, I’ve been in the weeds with her.
I was comparing menus and negotiating prices. I was coordinating with the florist about these wild orchid arrangements she had to have.
I even spent a Saturday helping Evan’s clueless cousin fix a playlist for the reception. I was in deep.
