My step Daughter Said I Was Embarrassing and Uninvited Me—So I Cancelled the Caterer and Flowers
The Boutique Betrayal and the Weight of ‘Embarrassing’
Then, 3 weeks before the wedding, Lily asks me to come with her to a tasting and dress fitting.
I figured we’d grab lunch after. Maybe we would joke around like we’ve started to more lately.
Instead, we’re in the car halfway to the boutique when she hits me with a request.
“I think it’s better if you don’t come to the wedding.” I thought she was joking.
I laughed. “Big mistake.”
“I’m serious.” She said.
“It’s just you’re kind of embarrassing.” “I embarrassing?”
That word sat in my chest like a weight. I asked her what she meant.
She rattled off a list. She said I talk too much.
She said I posted about the engagement dinner before she did. She said I refer to her as my daughter in front of people and it’s weird.
Then she says, “I’ve already talked to mom she’s coming solo it’ll be easier.”
“Easier.” I said nothing.
I drove her to the boutique. I sat in the car while she tried on the dress I helped pay for.
I took her home. Then I went to the garage and sat with a beer for an hour staring at the wall.
Later that night, my wife tried to talk to me about it. She said Lily’s under stress and she didn’t mean it like that.
She said maybe it was better to let things cool off and just focus on the marriage.
That’s when it hit me. I wasn’t part of the marriage; I wasn’t part of the family.
I was the help. I’d just spent 15 grand being treated like an inconvenience.
