My step Daughter Said I Was Embarrassing and Uninvited Me—So I Cancelled the Caterer and Flowers

The Consequences of Exclusion and Standing My Ground

The next morning, I called the caterer and the florist. Both were booked under my name on my card.

I cancelled. They were kind about it.

One even said, “You wouldn’t believe how often this happens.” Then I waited.

It took about 2 days. The phone rings.

It’s Lily screaming. “What do you mean the caterers cancelled? What are we supposed to do?”

“The wedding’s in 3 weeks!” I said, calm as anything, “You uninvited me.”

“I assumed that meant I was also uninvited from footing the bill.”

“You can’t do that!” “I just did.”

She hung up on me. Then Sarah called.

She was livid. She said I’d embarrassed her and that I was being vindictive.

She said this was her daughter’s big day. Maybe I was being petty, but I don’t think so.

For years I’ve shown up. I’ve loved that girl fiercely, even when she made it hard.

I didn’t expect a trophy. But damn, a seat at the wedding, a simple thank you, not being called embarrassing—was that too much?

Here’s the kicker, though. Evan’s mom messaged me on Facebook.

She said she heard what happened and agreed with me. She said Lily’s been acting entitled and bratty.

She said Evan’s had second thoughts, though he won’t say it out loud. I don’t know what’ll happen next.

The wedding’s still on, though now they’re scrambling for vendors. I haven’t heard from Lily since.

Sarah’s barely talking to me. The house is quiet.

But for once I didn’t just roll over. Maybe that makes me the bad guy in her story.

But at least in mine I finally stopped playing the fool.
